Original content

English translation

The Prophet said to that sick man: "Say this: 'O You who make the difficult easy, Grant us good in the house of our present world, Grant us good in the house of our afterlife. Make the path smooth and pleasant for us like a garden; Be Yourself our destination, O Noble One.'" The believers will say at the gathering (Resurrection), "O angel, Wasn't Hell the common road for all? Both believer and infidel must pass over it; Yet we saw neither smoke nor fire on this road. Here is Paradise and the court of safety, So where was that vile crossing-place?" Then the angel will say, "That green garden Which you saw at such-and-such a place on the passage, That was Hell and the place of severe punishment; For you, it became a garden, an orchard, and trees. Since you made this hell-natured carnal soul, A fire-worshipping, trouble-seeking fire, Through your efforts it became full of purity, And you extinguished the fire for the sake of God. The fire of lust which used to flame Became the greenery of piety and the light of guidance. The fire of anger in you became forbearance, And the darkness of ignorance in you became knowledge. The fire of greed in you became self-sacrifice, And that envy, which was like a thorn, became a rose garden. Since you extinguished all these fires of yours For the sake of Truth, entirely and beforehand, And you made the fiery soul like a garden, And cast into it the seed of faithfulness, With nightingales of remembrance and glorification within it, Singing sweetly in the meadow by the riverbank. You answered the Caller of Truth, You brought water into the hellfire of the soul. Our Hell, likewise, in regard to you, Has become greenery, a rose-garden, leaves, and wealth." What is the reward for goodness, O son? Grace, bounty, and respected recompense. Did you not say, "We are the sacrifice; Before the attributes of eternity, we are mortal"? "Whether we are vagabonds or madmen, We are drunk with that Cupbearer and that cup. We bow our heads to His decree and command, We give our sweet souls as a pledge. As long as the fantasy of the Beloved is in our secret hearts, Serving and sacrificing our lives is our business. Wherever they kindled the candle of affliction, Hundreds of thousands of lovers' souls burned. Lovers who are from within the house, Are moths to the candle of the Friend's face." O heart, go there where they are illuminated with you, And where they act as a coat of mail for you against afflictions. They show kindness in response to your offenses; They make a place for you in the midst of the soul. They make a place for you in the midst of the soul, So they may fill you with wine like a goblet. Take up residence in the midst of their souls; Make your home in the sky, O radiant full moon! When they open the book of the heart like Mercury, So that secrets may be revealed to you. Be with your kin; like a wanderer, If you are a fragment of the moon, attach yourself to the full moon. Why should the part avoid its whole? Why this great mingling with opposites? See the genus that has become species in behavior; See the hidden things that have become manifest on His path. As long as you buy coquetry like a woman, O foolish one, How will you find support from lies and coquetry? Flattery and sweet, deceptive words, You take and put in your pocket like a woman. Insults and slaps from kings Are better for you than the praise of the misguided. Suffer the slap of kings, do not eat the honey of the base, So that through the good fortune of noble men you may become someone. For from them come robes of honor and prosperity; In the shelter of the spirit, the body becomes a soul. Wherever you see one naked and destitute, Know that he has fled from his master. So that he might become whatever his heart desires, That blind, wicked, and fruitless heart of his. If you became what the master desired, You would adorn yourself and your own self. Whoever flees from the master in the world, He flees from good fortune, know this. You have learned a trade for the earning of the body; Now lay hold upon the trade of religion. In this world you have become clothed and rich; When you come out from here, what will you do? Learn a trade that in the afterlife, The income of earning forgiveness may come in. That world is a city full of markets and earning, Lest you think that the earning of this world is sufficient. The Exalted Truth said that this worldly earning, Compared to that earning, is but the play of children. Like a child who leaps upon another child, Pretending to converse, making contact. Children set up a shop in their play, But there is no profit save the passing of time. Night falls, he comes into the house hungry; The other children have gone, and he remains alone. This world is a playground, and death is night; You return with an empty purse, full of fatigue. The earning of religion is love and inward attraction, O stubborn one, it is the capacity for the Light of Truth. This base soul will want you to make a perishable earning; How long will you earn base things? Leave it, enough! If the base soul seeks a noble earning for you, Trickery and deceit are riding behind it.
