روضهٔ اول / First Garden (Rowze 1) of Jami's Baharestan

The First Garden (روضهٔ اول) is the opening division of Jami's Baharestan, a prosimetric work modeled on Sa'di's Gulestan. This garden collects short anecdotes and sayings drawn from the lives and words of the Sufi shaykhs and mystics, each prose passage capped by a verse that distills its lesson. Its recurring themes are humility, sincerity, forbearance, and the inner states of the people of the path. Section 25 (the saying of Yusuf ibn al-Husayn that humility is the key to all good and egotism the key to all evil) and the related Section 32 (Khwaja Yusuf Hamadani and Ibn al-Saqqa) both belong to this garden, which sits between the whole Baharestan collection and its individual sections.
