## Fourth Garden of the Baharestan

Jami's *Baharestan* is arranged as eight *rowzeh* (gardens), each a thematic chapter that strings together short prose anecdotes interwoven with verse. The Fourth Garden (روضهٔ چهارم) is one of these chapters and serves as the immediate container for the prose sections that belong to it, including the anecdote of the Medinan scholar overcome by love for a singing slave-girl. Inserting this garden between the whole *Baharestan* collection and its individual numbered sections restores the work's native Collection -> Garden -> Section structure, so that each section is reached through its proper chapter rather than hanging directly off the collection.

God Almighty addresses His Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - saying: 'And each account We relate to you of the news of the messengers is that by which We make your heart firm' - that is, We recite to you the stories of the prophets so that We may make your heart steadfast in that which you are.
When you fashion an image in your heart out of true devotion,
give it life through the trumpet-breath of the gnostics.
And if your heart is made to waver by the stirring of base nature,
give it steadfastness through the exposition of the tales of the people of heart.

هزاران داستان حمد و ثنا از زبان مرغان بهارستان عشق و وفا که از منابر اغصان فضل و احسان به حسن اصوات و طیب الحان علی الدوام خوانند و به مسامع حاضران مجامع قدس و ناظران مناظر انس علی مرالشهور و الاعوام رسانند. 
صانعی را که گلستان سپهر
باشد از گلشن حسنش ورقی 
یا بود بهر ثنا خوانانش
پر نثار در و گوهر طبقی 
جلت عظمة جلاله و علت کلمة کماله و هزار درود و تحیت و سرود از گلوی عندلیبان بستانسرای فضل وجود که مطربان بزم شهود و مغنیان عشرتخانه وجد و وجودند.
هر گل روضه ابلاغ که هست 
گل این باغ ز رویش ورقی
نیست زاوراق چمن مرغان را 
بجز اوصاف جمالش سبقی
و علی صحبه و آله المقتبسین من مشکاة علومه و احواله امابعد نموده می آید که چون در این وقت دلپسند فرزند ارجمند ضیاء الدین یوسف - عصمه الله عما یفضیه الی التلهف و التأسف - به آموختن مقدمات کلام عرب و اندوختن قواعد فنون ادب اشتغال نمود. 
و پوشیده نماند که طفلان نورسیده و کودکان رنج نادیده را از تعلم اصطلاحاتی که مأنوس طباع و مألوف استماع ایشان نیست بر دل بار وحشتی و در خاطر غبار دهشتی می نشیند، از برای تلطیف سر و تشحیذ خاطر وی گاه گاهی از کتاب گلستان که از انفاس متبرکه شیخ نامدار و استاد بزرگوار مصلح الدین سعدی شیرازی است رحمه الله تعالی، سطری چند خوانده می شد.
نه گلستان که روضه ای ز بهشت 
خاک و خاشاک او عبیر سرشت
بابهایش بهشت را درها 
فیض ده قصه هاش کوثرها
نکته هایش نهفته در پرده 
رشک حوران ناز پرورده
دلکش اشعار او بلند اشجار 
از نم لطف تحتهاالانهار
در آن اثنا چنان در خاطر آمد که - تبرکا با نفاسه الشریفة و تتبعا لا شعاره اللطیفة - ورقی چند بر آن اسلوب ساخته شود و جزوی چند بر آن منوال پرداخته گردد تا حاضران را داستانی باشد و غایبان را ارمغانی و چون این معنی به انجام رسید و این صورت به اتمام انجامید، 
با خرد گفتم چه سازم زیور این نوعروس
تا به چشم خواستگارانش فزاید زیب و زین 
گفت درهای ثنای شهریار کامگار
نصرة الدینا معز الدوله کهف الخافقین 
اختر برج جلالت گوهر درج شرف
شمع بزم دوده تیمورخان سلطان حسین 
آسمان قدری که چون خور حال ذرات جهان
باشد از چشم عنایت دیدن او را فرض عین 
دین دان در ذمه جودش همه حاجات خلق
کم پسندد جود او در گردن خود عار دین 
اعز الله تعالی انصاره و ضاعف اقتداره و ادام اولاده الکرام تحت ظلال ملکه و سلطانه و انام کافة الانام فی کنف عدله و احسانه.
گلستان گرچه سعدی کرد از این پیش 
به نام سعد بن زنگی تمامش
بهارستان من نام از کسی یافت 
که شاید سعد بن زنگی غلامش
گذری کن درین بهارستان 
تا ببینی در او گلستانها
وز لطایف به هر گلستانی 
رسته گلها دمیده ریحانها
و ترتیب این بهارستان بر هشت روضه اتفاق افتاده است، هر روضه ای بهشت آیین مشتمل بر رنگ دیگر از شقایق و بوی دیگر از ریاحین نه شقایقش را از پایمال باد خزان پژمردگی، و نه ریاحینش را از دستبرد برد دی افسردگی. 
دمیده مرغزارش بر جوانب
شکفته لاله زارش در نواحی 
ز شبنم لاله را خوی در بناگوش
ز باران غنچه را می در صراحی 
غزیر الدمع من عین السواقی
کثیرالضحک عن ثغر الاقاحی 
اشارت می کند نرگس که می نوش
فان العفو للزلات ماحی 
همی ترسم که از لطف اشارت
کند پرهیزگاران را مباحی 
التماس از تماشائیان این ریاض خالی از خار ملاحظه اعراض و خاشاک مطالبه اعواض آنکه چون به قدم اهتمام بر اینان بگذرند و به نظر اعتبار در اینها بنگرند باغبان را که در تربیت شان خون جگر خورده است و در تنمیت شان جان شیرین بر لب آورده به دعایی یاد کنند و به ثنایی شاد گردانند.
هر کس ز نیک بختان زین تازه رس درختان 
در سایه ای نشیند یا میوه ای بچیند
آن به که پیش گیرد آیین حق گزاری 
راه کرم سپارد رسم دعا گزیند
گوید که بنده جامی کین روضه ساخت یا رب 
همواره از خدا پر وز خود تهی نشیند
جز راه او نپوید جز وصل او نجوید 
جز نام او نگوید جز روی او نبیند

در خبر است که خدای تعالی فردای قیامت با بنده از مفلسی و بی مایگی شرمنده می گوید که فلان دانشمند یا عارف را در فلان محله می شناختی؟ گوید: آری می شناختم فرمان رسد تو را به وی بخشیدم. 
قدر من در صف عشاق تو زان پستتر است
که زنم گام ارادت به مقامات وصول 
در دلم نقش شده نام گدایان درت
بس بود نامه احوال مرا مهر قبول

It is related that God the Exalted, on the morrow of the Resurrection, will say to a servant who is ashamed of his destitution and lack of substance: 'Did you know such-and-such a scholar or mystic in such-and-such a quarter?' He will say: 'Yes, I knew him.' The command will come: 'I have bestowed you upon him' (that is, I have forgiven you for his sake).

My worth in the ranks of Your lovers is too low
for me to set the step of devotion toward the stations of union.
The names of the beggars at Your door are engraved in my heart;
the seal of acceptance is enough for the record of my state.

در دل چنان می گشت و در خاطر چنان می گذشت که این نامه به زودی به آخر نه انجامد و خامه در طی مقاصد آن حالیا از جنبش نیارامد اما چون آیینه طبع گوینده زنگ ملالت گرفت و به صیقل صدق رغبت شنونده صقالت نپذیرفت بدینقدر اقتصار افتاد. 
بسط کن جامیا بسیط سخن
که ازان خوبتر بساطی نیست

طبع را گر در آن نشاطی نیست 
نیست کافی نشاط طبع تو نیز

و هرچه از مقوله نظم گذشته و به ناظمی منسوب نگشته زاده طبع محرر این رساله است و نتیجه فکر مقرر این مقاله.
جامی هرجا که نامه ای انشاء آراست 
از گفته کس به عاریت هیچ نخواست
آن را که ز صنع خود دکان پرکالاست

امید به مکارم اخلاق مطالعه کنندگان آنکه چون بر خللی مطلع شوند به ذیل عفو و اغماض بپوشند و در افشای آن به زبان عیب و اعتراض نکوشند. 
چون ببینی ز آشنا عیبی
گر به بیگانگان نگویی به 
زانکه در کیش آخراندیشان
عیب پوشی ز عیب جویی به 
قطعه تاریخ قطع اطناب اطناب و طی اسباب اسهاب.
تک و پوی خامه درین طرفه نامه 
که جامی بدو کرد طبع آزمایی
به وقتی شد آخر که تاریخ هجرت

و مسئول من الله ذی الجلال و الاکرام

## English translation
It kept turning in my heart and passing through my mind that this book would not soon reach its end, and that the pen, in pursuing its aims, would not for now rest from its movement. But since the mirror of the speaker's nature had taken on the rust of weariness and did not accept polishing through the burnisher of the listener's sincere eagerness, it was confined to just this much.

Spread out, O Jami, the plain of speech,
for there is no carpet finer than that;
yet sit silent and hold your breath,
if your nature finds no joy in it.
Nor is the joy of your own nature enough,
if on the listener's part there is no delight.

And whatever verse has passed here and is not attributed to any other poet is the offspring of the nature of the writer of this treatise and the fruit of the settled thought of the author of this discourse.

Wherever Jami has composed and adorned a writing,
he has borrowed nothing from anyone's words.
One whose shop is full of wares of his own making
has no business brokering the merchandise of others.

The hope placed in the noble character of the readers is that, when they notice a flaw, they will cover it with the skirt of pardon and forbearance, and will not strive to expose it with the tongue of faultfinding and objection.

When you see a fault in a friend,
it is better not to tell it to strangers,
for in the creed of those who think of the end,
covering faults is better than seeking faults.

A fragment giving the date of the cutting-short of prolixity and the folding-up of the causes of long-windedness:

The running and striving of the pen in this wondrous book,
with which Jami tried his talent,
came to its end at a time when the date of the Hijra
becomes nine hundred, if you add eight to it.

And what is asked of God, Possessor of Majesty and Honor, is triumph in attaining the goal, success in a good conclusion, and blessing and peace upon Muhammad and his righteous, noble family.

ابوهاشم صوفی - قدس سره - گفته است که کوه را به نوک سوزن از بیخ کندن آسان تر است از زنگ کبر از دل بیفکندن.

در شب تاریک بر سنگ سیه پنهان تر است 
وز درون کردن برون آسان مگیر آن را کزان
کوه را کندن به سوزن از زمین آسان تر است

Abu Hashim the Sufi — may his secret be sanctified — said that it is easier to uproot a mountain from its base with the tip of a needle than to cast the rust of pride out of the heart.
Do not boast of being free of pride, for that trace is more hidden than the print of an ant's foot
upon a black stone in the dark of night.
And do not deem it easy to bring it out from within, for
uprooting a mountain with a needle from the earth is easier than that.

The master of the order, Junayd - may his soul be sanctified - says: 'The tales of the masters are a troop from the troops of God,' meaning that the words of the shaykhs, firmly rooted in knowledge and gnosis, are an army from the armies of God Most High; to whatever land of the heart it directs its resolve, there the adversaries of the carnal soul (nafs) and passion are turned to flight.

Though the onslaught of the nafs and passion be Satan's host,
When they bring their force to bear upon the heart of the God-worshipping man,
Save the armies of the tales of the spiritual guides,
What has the power to bring defeat upon those highwaymen?

Dhul-Nun - may his secret be sanctified - went to one of the sheikhs of the Maghrib concerning a certain question. The sheikh said: 'For what have you come? If you have come to learn the knowledge of the first and the last, there is no way to that - the Creator knows all of it. And if you have come to seek Him, then there, where you took your very first step, He Himself was already present.'

Before this, I imagined You to be outside myself;
At the farthest reach of my journey, I supposed You to be.
Now that I have found You, I know that You are the very One
Whom I had left behind at the very first step.

I move on ahead, dancing and scattering my hands in joy.

سر بر در تو به حکم عشقم نه به مزد

چون تواند عاشق از طوق وفایت سر کشید
قمری آسا طوق او از گردن او خاسته ست

Fozeyl Ayaz — may God be pleased with him — says: I worship the Truth, glorified be He, out of love, for I cannot bear not to worship. One of this group was asked: Who is base? He said: The one who worships the Truth out of fear and hope. Then they said: How, then, do you worship? He said: With affection and love, for His affection and love holds me to service and obedience.

O beloved, I cannot bear to be far from Your door,
I cannot be content with paradise and its houris.
My head is at Your door by the decree of love, not for wages,
What can I do—I cannot be patient away from this door.

When would the burning of the one You slew be quenched beneath the dark earth,
Since this fire has risen from his own radiant soul.

How can the lover draw his head out from the collar of Your fidelity,
When, like the ring-dove, his collar has grown from his very neck.

ابکی حذار ان تفارقینی

Sari al-Saqati — may God the Exalted sanctify his secret — assigned Junayd a task, and when Junayd carried it out in accordance with his wish, Sari threw him a scrap of paper on which was written: 'I heard a caravan-driver chanting in the desert, saying:'

I weep — and what makes you know what makes me weep?
I weep for fear that you may part from me,
And sever my cord and forsake me.

He says (in Persian):

I weep blood — what should I conceal from you?
For it is for your sake that I keep these two eyes weeping.
Though I have a heart made joyful by union,
I bear a hundred brands upon it from the dread of separation.

And Junayd — may his secret be sanctified — also says: one day I came into Sari's house, and he was reciting this verse and weeping:

Neither by day nor by night is there any joy for me,
So I care not whether the night grows long or short.

Neither by night nor by day am I free of moaning and sighing;
Let my night be long if it will, or let it be short.

I have traversed the plain and cleft the mountain,
From everything that came before me I have turned my face away,
Until I found the way to the sanctuary of union with You.

Ma'ruf al-Karkhi - may God sanctify his soul - has said that the Sufi here is a guest, and for a guest to make demands upon the host is an offense; a guest who is well-mannered is one who waits, not one who demands.
I am your guest, standing in the ranks of the masters of devotion,
seated, content with whatever may come from you.
Having fixed the eye of hope upon the table of your generosity,
I await your bounty; I am not one who demands.

ابوسعید خراز - قدس الله سره - گوید که در اوایل حال ارادت محافظت سر وقت خود می کردم، روزی به بیابانی درآمدم و می رفتم، از قفای من آواز چیزی برآمد دل خود از التفات به آن و چشم خود را از نظر به آن نگاه داشتم. 
به سوی من آمد تا به من نزدیک شد، دیدم که دو سبع عظیم به دوش من بالا آمدند، من به ایشان نظر نکردم، نه در وقت برآمدن و نه در وقت فرود آمدن.
کیست دانی صوفی صافی ز رنگ تفرقه 
آن که دارد رو به یکرنگی درین کاخ دو رنگ
نگسلد سر رشته سرش ز جانان گر بفرض 
ره بر او گیرد ز یک سو شیر و دیگر سو پلنگ
و هم وی گفته - قدس سره - هر که گمان برده به کوشش توان رسید رنجی کشیده بیهوده، و هرکه تصور کرده که بی کوشش توان رسید جز راه آرزو نپیموده. 
از رنج کسی به گنج وصلت نرسید
وین طرفه که بی رنج کس آن گنج ندید 
هرکس که دوید گور نگرفت به دشت
لیکن نگرفت گور جز آن کس که دوید

Abu Sa'id al-Kharraz — may God sanctify his secret — says: In the early days of my spiritual aspiration, I used to guard the secret of my present state. One day I came out into a desert and was walking, when from behind me arose the sound of something. I held my heart back from turning toward it and kept my eye from looking at it.

It came toward me until it drew near to me; I saw that two great beasts of prey climbed up onto my shoulders. I did not look at them, neither at the time of their climbing up nor at the time of their coming down.

Do you know who is the Sufi, pure from the color of dispersion?
He who turns his face toward oneness in this two-colored palace.

The end of the thread of his secret does not break from the Beloved, even if, suppose,
A lion should block his path on one side and a leopard on the other.

And he also said — may his secret be sanctified: Whoever has supposed that one can arrive through striving has borne a pain in vain, and whoever has imagined that one can arrive without striving has trodden nothing but the road of vain desire.

Through toil no one reached the treasure of Your union;
And the wonder is this, that without toil no one saw that treasure.

Not everyone who ran caught the wild ass in the plain;
Yet none caught the wild ass except the one who ran.

Bayazid - may God the Exalted sanctify his secret - was asked: which is the sunnah (the recommended way) and which is the fard (the obligatory)? He answered: The sunnah is the renunciation of the world, and the fard is the companionship of the Lord.

O you who, in the law of the masters of spiritual states,
put to me your question about the sunnah and the fard:
The sunnah has come to be the turning of one's face away from the world,
the fard is to find the path of nearness to the Lord.

The lover who seeks requital for the beloved's absence,
Or wishes to stand at the door of union with the beloved—
None is more base than he in the world,
Who desires from the beloved anything but the beloved.

زین رهرویم ببخش راه آوردی

Abu Ali al-Daqqaq - may his secret be sanctified - said that toward the end of his life so much pain had appeared in him that at the close of each day he would climb up to the roof, turn his face toward the sun, and say: 'O wanderer of the realm, how were you today and how did you pass the day? Did you anywhere shed light upon one grieved by this tale? Did you anywhere gain word of those overturned by this event?' He would keep speaking in this same vein until the sun went down.

O sun, than whom there is no such wanderer of the world,
grant me from this wayfaring a keepsake for the road.
Whom did you see today who, on the path of love,
had dust upon his face and pain within his heart?

آن است دوستدار که هر چند دشمنی
بیند ز دوست بیش، شود دوستدارتر 
بر سر هزار سنگ ستم گر خورد ازو
گردد بنای عشقش ازان استوارتر 
و هم از وی آرند که وقتی بیمار شد، خلیفه طبیب ترسا به معالجت وی فرستاد از وی پرسید که خاطر تو چه می خواهد؟ گفت: آنکه تو مسلمان شوی گفت: اگر من مسلمان شوم تو نیک می شوی و از بستر بیماری برمی خیزی؟ گفت: آری!
پس ایمان بر وی عرضه کرد و وی ایمان آورد و شبلی از بستر برخاست و بر وی از بیماری اثری نه پس هر دو همراه پیش خلیفه رفتند و قصه را باز گفتند خلیفه گفت: پنداشتم که طبیب پیش بیمار فرستاده ام من خود بیمار پیش طبیب فرستاده بوده ام. 
هر کس که از هجوم محبت مریض شد
داند طبیب خویش لقای حبیب را 
چون بر سرش طبیب بهشتی نهد قدم
بخشد شفا ز علت هستی طبیب را

## English translation
Shibli — may God the Exalted sanctify his secret — was seized by a spiritual ecstasy, and they took him to the madhouse. A group went to gaze upon him. He asked, 'Who are you?' They said, 'Your friends.' He picked up a stone and rushed at them, and they all fled. He laughed and said, 'Come back, O pretenders! For friends do not flee from friends, nor do they shy away from the stone of their affliction.'

That one is a true lover who, however much enmity
He sees from the Beloved, grows all the more loving;
Though he receive upon his head a thousand stones of cruelty from Him,
The foundation of his love grows only firmer thereby.

And they also relate of him that once he fell ill, and the caliph sent a Christian physician to treat him. The physician asked him, 'What does your heart desire?' He said, 'That you become a Muslim.' He said, 'If I become a Muslim, will you grow well and rise from your sickbed?' He said, 'Yes!'

Then he presented the faith to him, and the physician embraced faith, and Shibli rose from his bed with no trace of illness left upon him. Then the two went together before the caliph and recounted the tale. The caliph said, 'I thought I had sent a physician to a sick man; in truth I had sent a sick man to a physician.'

Whoever has fallen sick from the onslaught of love
Knows the meeting with the Beloved to be his physician;
When the heavenly physician sets foot at his bedside,
He bestows healing from the very malady of existence.

Your remembrance so overtook it that within it
It left no room for anything else at all.

Whoever rises at dawn from sleep and has nothing in his head
but the thought of eating - seek not from him the way of wakefulness.
And he who washes his hand as soon as he draws his feet from the bedside,
only to bring that hand to the table and the spread - wash your hands of him.

You must set aside passion and desire from your head,
And that thing which you hold in your hand, give it away from your hand,
You endure a hundred wounds of affliction, yet do not stir from your place.

There, where He adorns Himself for the display of His beauty.

هر که بینی که پس از پرورش فقر او را
در صف زنده دلان نام به ارشاد رود 
باد دعوی به سر او مبر ای خواجه مباد
که از این بی ادبی دین تو بر باد رود

Khwaja Yusuf Hamadani — may his secret be sanctified — was once preaching at the Nizamiyya of Baghdad when a jurist known as Ibn al-Saqqa rose and asked a question. He said: 'Sit down, for in your speech I perceive the scent of unbelief; perhaps your death will not be upon the religion of Islam.' Some time afterward that jurist became a Christian and died in Christianity.

Whomever you see, who after the nurturing of poverty,
Has his name go forth to spiritual guidance among the ranks of the living-hearted—
Do not carry the wind of pretension into his head, O khwaja, beware,
Lest through this ill-breeding your own faith be scattered to the wind.

Ruwaym - may his soul be sanctified - has said: Chivalry (javanmardi) is that you hold your brothers excused, and that regarding a fault which occurs from them, you do not deal with them in such a way that an apology should have to be sought from them.

Chivalry is two things, O chivalrous one,
Listen to me, that I may tell you truly:
The first is that you overlook your companions,
Even if at every moment you see a hundred faults and shortcomings;
The second is that there should never come from you
Such a deed that their pardon must be sought.

Whoever tells you that your faith is severing and joining,
you should accept that pleasing saying from him.
What is the essential meaning of that severing and joining?
It means that you sever your heart from creation, and join it to God.

A disciple said to Bishr Hafi - may God's mercy be upon him: When I obtain bread, I do not know with what relish to eat it. He said: Bring to mind the blessing of well-being, and take that as your relish.
When the destitute one sets dry bread before himself,
which gives the soul nourishment from the table of poverty;
when at that moment his nature inclines toward a relish,
since the remembrance of well-being is not his, there is no relish at all.

If a wealthy man comes to you,

Do not reckon a miser as your surety,
and do not accept a base wretch as your god.

Yusuf ibn al-Husayn - may God sanctify his secret - said: All good things are in one house, and its key is humility and modesty; and all evils are in one house, and its key is 'we-ness' and 'I-ness' (egotism).

All good things are gathered together in one house, and
that house has no key other than humility.
Evils, by the same measure, are gathered in one house,
and it has no key except 'we-ness' and 'I-ness'.
Beware! Take care that you do not slip from the path of good,
and do not cast yourself into the peril of evil.

کوشش بکنی و هر چه بتوان دانست
دانی پس ازان هر چه بدانی بکنی 
اسکندر رومی در اوان جهانگیری به حیله تمام حصاری را بگشاد و به ویران کردن آن فرمان داد گفتند در آنجا حکیمی است دانا و بر حل مشکلات حکمت توانا وی را طلب داشت چون بیامد شکلی دید از قبول طبع دور و طبع اهل قبول از وی نفور گفت: این چه صورت غریب و هیکل مهیب است؟ حکیم از آن سخن برآشفت و خندان خندان در آن آشفتگی گفت:
طعنه بر من مزن به صورت زشت 
ای تهی از فضیلت و انصاف
تن بود چون غلاف و جان شمشیر 
کار شمشیر می کند نه غلاف
دیگر گفت: هر که را خلق با خلق نه نیکوست پوست بر بدن زندان اوست، چنان از وجود خود در تنگنایی است افتاده که زندان در جنب آن بزمگاهی است گشاده. 
کسی که با همه کس خوی بد به کار برد
همیشه در کف صد غصه ممتحن دانش 
مرو به شحنه که زندان مقام او گردان
که پوست بر تن بدخو بس است زندانش 
و دیگر گفت: حسود همیشه در رنج است و با پروردگار خویش ستیزه سنج، هر چه دیگران را دهد وی نپسندد و هر چه نه نصیب وی دل در آن بندد.
اعتراض است بر احکام جهاندار حکیم 
عادت مرد حسد پیشه که خاکش به دهن
هر چه بیند به کف غیر فغان بردارد 
که چرا داد به وی بی سبب آن را نه به من
دیگر گفت: خردمندان کریم مال بر دوستان شمارند و بی خردان لئیم از برای دشمنان بگذارند. 
هرچه آمد به دست مرد کریم
همه در پای دوستان افشاند 
وانچه اندوخت سفله طبع لئیم
بعد مرگ از برای دشمن ماند 
دیگر گفت: با خردان در هزل و فسوس آویختن آبروی بزرگی ریختن است و غبار ذلت و خواری انگیختن.
ای که بر سفله می دری جامه 
نام ترسم به گرگیت برود
مشو افسوس پیشه با خردان 
ور نه فر بزرگیت برود
دیگر گفت: هر که با زیردستان شیوه مشت زنی بر دست گیرد در لگدکوب زبردستان بمیرد. 
دلا گوش کن از من این نکته خوش
که مانده ست در گوشم از نکته دانان 
که هرکس کشد تیغ نامهربانی
شود کشته تیغ نامهربانان 
چون اسکندر گوش خویش از آن جواهر حکمت پر یافت دهانش را چون گوش خود پر جواهر کرد و عنان از خرابی آن حصار برتافت.

A sage (hakim) is one who knows the reality of things as far as he is able, and who makes acting according to what pertains to action a settled disposition of his own soul.

Happy is he who forsakes fleeting pleasure
and contrives for everlasting endurance;
who strives, and all that can be known
he knows, and then acts upon all that he knows.

Alexander the Roman, in the early days of his conquest, took a fortress by a complete stratagem and ordered its destruction. They told him that within it dwelt a wise and learned sage, able in resolving the difficulties of wisdom. He summoned him. When the sage came, Alexander saw a form far from the acceptance of nature, from which the disposition of accepting people recoiled. He said: 'What strange face and awesome figure is this?' The sage was angered by that speech, and laughing amid his agitation he said:

Do not taunt me for an ugly face,
O you who are empty of virtue and fairness;
the body is like a sheath and the soul a sword—
it is the sword that does the work, not the sheath.

He said again: Whoever's disposition toward people is not good, his own skin upon his body is his prison; he has fallen into such a strait from his own existence that a real prison beside it is an open banquet-hall.

One who employs an ill temper with everyone
is ever tested, gripped in a hundred sorrows—know this;
do not go to the constable that his dwelling be made a prison,
for the skin upon the ill-natured one's body is prison enough.

And he said again: The envious one is ever in torment and contends with his own Lord; whatever is given to others he disapproves, and whatever is not his own portion, upon that his heart is set.

Samnun al-Muhibb — may his secret be sanctified — said: Let the servant's love of God become so pure that he casts no ugliness upon the whole world.

If the love of Your pre-eternal beauty makes its home in the heart,
you will not set the eye of hope upon the houris of paradise.
How shall the love of pre-eternal beauty be granted to you,
until you cast no charge of ugliness upon all the horizons?

Abu Bakr al-Warraq - may his secret be sanctified - said: If greed were asked, 'Who is your father?' it would say: 'Doubt in the decrees of the Creator.' And if it were asked, 'What is your trade?' it would say: 'The acquisition of abasement and lowliness.' And if it were asked, 'What is your end?' it would say: 'Captivity in the torment of deprivation.'

If you ask greed, 'Who is your father?'
It says: 'Doubt in the divine decrees.'
And if you say, 'What is your work?' it says:
'Wearing away one's life in the torments of deprivation.'

ز شاهان عدل می باید دگر هیچ
کلمه دویم در وصیت رعیت به نیکوکاری و فرمانبرداری 
تخم ظلم شاه نافرمانی مردم بود
جو چو کاری حاصل آن کشته کی گندم بود 
کلمه سیوم در محافظت صحت ابدان که تا گرسنه نشوند دست به طعام نیارند و چون بخورند پیش از آنکه سیر شوند دست از طعام بدارند
آن به که ز اسباب مرض پرهیزی 
وز ننگ طبیبان دغل بگریزی
ناگشته تهی معده به خوان ننشینی 
زان پیش که معده پرکنی برخیزی
کلمه چهارم در نصیحت زنان که چشم از روی بیگانگان دور دارند و روی از چشم نامحرمان مستور 
زن آن بود که به هرکس که نیست محرم او
اگر چه مردم چشم است روی ننماید 
به روی هر که نه جفت ویست گرچه به حسن
بود چو ماه فلک طاق، چشم نگشاید

## English translation
Ibn Muqaffa says: The library of the sages of India used to be carried on a hundred camels. Their king asked for it to be abridged, and they brought it back to two camels; and upon his repeated request, it was settled upon four sayings:

The first saying, on guiding kings toward justice and the nurturing of subjects:
When the king of the world takes up the practice of justice,
ease becomes ever-present, time after time.
When a heart-stricken one moans from a wounded breast,
it is all from the sting of one who practices tyranny.
For deliverance from the world's twist upon twist,
from kings, justice is needed — nothing else at all.

The second saying, in counseling the subjects toward good conduct and obedience:
The seed of a king's oppression is the disobedience of the people;
when you sow barley, how could its harvest ever be wheat?

The third saying, on preserving the health of bodies: that until they are hungry they should not reach out their hand to food, and when they eat, before they grow full they should withdraw their hand from the food:
Better that you abstain from the causes of illness,
and flee from the disgrace of deceitful physicians.
Do not sit at the table before your stomach is empty,
and rise up before you fill your stomach.

The fourth saying, in advising women to keep their eyes away from the faces of strangers and their faces veiled from the eyes of the unrelated:
A woman is she who, to anyone who is not her intimate,
even though he be the pupil of the eye, does not show her face.
To the face of anyone who is not her mate — though in beauty
he be like the moon of the peerless sky — she does not open her eye.

چهار کلمه است که چهار پادشاه پرداخته اند که گویا یک تیر است که از چهار کمان انداخته اند: 
کسری گفته است: هرگز پشیمان نشدم از آنچه نگفته ام، و بسا گفته که از پشیمانی ان در خاک و خون خفته ام.
خامش نشین که جمع نشستن به خامشی 
بهتر ز گفتنی که پریشانی آورد
از سر سر به مهر پشیمان نشد کسی 
بس فاش گشته سر که پشیمانی آورد
قیصر فرموده است که قدرت من بر ناگفته بیش از آن است که بر گفته، یعنی آنچه نگفته ام بتوانم گفت و آنچه گفته ام نتوانم نهفت. 
هر چه افشای آن بود دشوار
با حریفان مگو به آسانی 
کانچه داری نهفته بتوان گفت
وانچه گفتی نهفت نتوانی 
خاقان چین در این معنی سخن چنین رانده است که بسیار باشد که پریشانی گفتن سختر باشد از پشیمانی نهفتن.
هر سر سر به مهر که در خاطر افتدت 
سرعت مکن به لوح بیانش نگاشتن
ترسم شود غرامت اظهار آن تو را 
مشکل تر از ندامت پوشیده داشتن
ملک هند بدین نکته زبان گشاده است که هر حرف که از زبان جسته است دست تصرف مرا از خود بسته است و هر چه نگفته ام مالک اویم اگر خواهم بگویم و اگر خواهم نگویم. 
بخردی را ز راز فاش و نهان
مثلی نیک بر زبان رفته 
کین چو تیر است مانده در قبضه
وان چو تیر است از کمان رفته

## English translation
There are four sayings that four kings composed, as though they were a single arrow shot from four bows:

Kesra (Khosrow) said: I have never regretted what I did not say, yet many a thing I said has left me lying in dust and blood from regret.

Sit silent, for to sit together in silence
is better than a speech that brings on turmoil.
No one has ever regretted a secret kept sealed;
many a disclosed secret has brought on regret.

Qaisar (Caesar) decreed: My power over the unsaid is greater than over the said; that is, what I have not said I am able to say, and what I have said I am unable to conceal.

Whatever is hard to disclose,
do not tell to your companions lightly;
for what you keep hidden can still be spoken,
but what you have spoken you can no longer hide.

The Khaqan of China spoke on this theme thus: It is often the case that the distress of speaking is harsher than the regret of concealing.

Every sealed secret that falls into your mind,
do not rush to inscribe it on the tablet of expression;
I fear the penalty of revealing it will prove for you
harder than the remorse of keeping it covered.

The king of India loosed his tongue on this point: Every word that has leapt from the tongue has tied down my hand of control over it, while whatever I have not said, I am its master—if I wish I speak it, and if I wish I do not.

Concerning the secret disclosed and the secret hidden,
a wise man has set a fine simile upon his tongue:
that this is like an arrow still held in the grip,
and that is like an arrow gone from the bow.

## English translation
There are five things which, to whomever they are given, place the reins of a pleasant life in his hand: first, health of the body; second, security; third, ampleness of livelihood; fourth, a compassionate companion; fifth, freedom from care. Whoever is deprived of these, a pleasant life is closed to him.

By five things are the means of a pleasant life attained,
By the agreement of the sages renowned throughout the horizons:
Leisure, security, health, and sufficiency of provision,
A good-natured companion, a comrade of fine character.

Ibrahim Khawwas - may his soul be sanctified - has said: Do not wear yourself out in seeking that which, in the eternal allotment, has already been made sufficient for you - and that is your sustenance (rizq); and do not squander that whose fulfillment has been required of you - and that is submission to the divine ordinances, both the commands and the prohibitions.
Your portion of sustenance was apportioned from all eternity;
How long will you scatter yourself in pursuit of sustenance?
The fruit of your life is servitude (to God);
Do not draw back your head from the rule of servitude.

Shaykh Abu al-Abbas Qassab - may his secret be sanctified - saw a dervish sewing his garment; every seam that did not come out straight he would undo and sew again. The Shaykh said: 'That is your idol.'

The Sufi whose trade is the patching of the khirqa —
if he plies the stitch of poverty, it is fine work;
but if the stirring of his ego moves his hand,
every stitch and thread of his is an idol and a zunnar (infidel's belt).

## English translation
Hasri — may God the Exalted sanctify his secret — said: 'The Sufi is he who is not found after his non-existence and does not cease to exist after his existence.' That is: the Sufi is he who, when he becomes annihilated from his own natural existence, does not return to it again, for 'the annihilated does not return'; and after that, when he becomes truly established in real existence and in subsistence-after-annihilation, he is never annihilated again.

Happy is he who, when he became naught from this metaphorical form,
No longer returned again to his own existence.
Thereafter, when he found existence from that source of grace,
Forever the door of non-existence was closed above him.

One day, in the presence of Khwaja Abd al-Khaliq Ghijduvani - may his secret be sanctified - a dervish said: 'If God Most High were to grant me the choice between Paradise and Hell, I would choose Hell, because Paradise is the desire of the ego (nafs) and Hell is the will of God Most High.' The Khwaja rejected him and said: 'What has a servant to do with choice? Wherever He says go, we go; and wherever He says stay, we stay.'

Do no deed apart from the Master's will,
O you who profess your servitude;
Wherever the Master's own will holds sway,
what business have servants with a will of their own?

Three deeds appear ugly from three groups: harshness from a king, greed for wealth from the learned, and miserliness from the wealthy.

The harsh temperament of a powerful king,

The wisdom in the existence of sovereigns is the manifestation of fairness and justice, not the manifestation of the attribute of grandeur and majesty. Nushirvan, although he was a stranger to the faith, was unique in justice and truthfulness; inevitably the Master of Creation—upon him be the most excellent of blessings—said with pride: 'I was born in the time of the just king.'

The Prophet, who in the era of Nushirvan
became by his face the eye and lamp of the world,
kept saying: I am free of oppression for this reason,
that I was born in the era of Nushirvan.
How well did that benevolent counselor say
into the heart's ear of that tyrannical king:
Beware the darkness of oppression,
and for the sake of trial take up justice as your practice.
If your justice brings no more glory than oppression,
then once again set your foot upon the path of oppression.

From the patched cloak and the staff, no sincerity and purity arrives,
And from the prayer-beads nothing but the scent of hypocrisy arrives.
Do not say each moment, 'To where does your chain reach?',
For from the chain no one to anywhere arrives.

The companion of a king should be a wise man given to thoughtful reflection, not an intimate given to frivolous jesting — for through the former he ascends to degrees of perfection, and through the latter he sinks to depths of deficiency.
Every subtle point that comes from the lips of one who knows is a jewel;
Happy is he who made his breast a casket-treasury of jewels.
The wise heart is a treasury filled with the jewels of wisdom;
Do not ever keep this treasury apart from yourself.

Fereydun, who in the soil of compassion sowed nothing but the seed of counsel, wrote this decree to his children: The pages of the days are the pages of lifespans; write upon them nothing but that which is the best of deeds and works.

The page of the age is the ledger of the life of all creation—
Thus spoke the wise one when he applied his thought—
Blessed is the one who, in this ledger pure of every letter,
Inscribed the mark of good and left behind the trace of good.

The intimates of kings are like a group who climb up a high mountain, but in the end, through the earthquakes of wrath and the calamities of fortune, they will fall down from that mountain. There is no doubt that the fall of those who stand higher will be harder, while the descent of those who are lower is easier.

The palace of nearness to the exalted king is lofty;
Do not climb too high upon that palace,
For I fear that when you fall down from that palace,
You will fall more grievously than any other fallen one.

نوشیروان روز نوروز یا مهرجان مجلس می داشت، دید یکی از حاضران که با وی نسبت خویشی داشت جام زرین در بغل نهاد، تغافل کرد و هیچ نگفت چون مجلس برشکست، شرابدار گفت: هیچ کس بیرون نرود تا تجسس کنیم که یک جام زرین درمی باید. 
نوشیروان گفت: بگذار آن کس که گرفت باز نخواهد داد و آن کس که گرفت باز دید نمامی نخواهد کرد بعد از چند روز آن شخص درآمد جامه های نو پوشیده و موزه نو در پا کرده.
نوشیروان اشارت به جامه های وی کرد که اینها از آن است وی دامن از موزه برداشت که این نیز از آن است. نوشیروان بخندید دانست که آن را به ضرورت احتیاج کرده بود، بفرمود تا هزار مثقال زر به وی دهند. 
از گناه تو چو آگاه شود شاه کریم
معترف باش به آن وز کرمش عذر بخواه 
مکن انکار گنه زانکه گناه دگر است
بلکه بسیاری ازان هم بتر انکار گناه

## English translation
Nushirvan held an assembly on the day of Nowruz or Mehregan. He noticed that one of those present, who had a kinship relation with him, tucked a golden cup under his arm; the king feigned not to see it and said nothing. When the assembly broke up, the wine-steward said: Let no one leave until we search, for one golden cup is missing.
Nushirvan said: Let it be — the one who took it will not give it back, and the one who saw him take it will not turn informer. After some days that person came in, dressed in new garments and with new boots on his feet.
Nushirvan gestured toward his garments, [signaling] that these come from that [cup]. The man lifted his hem from the boot, [signaling] that this too comes from that. Nushirvan laughed, for he understood that the man had done it out of pressing need, and he ordered that a thousand mithqals of gold be given to him.

When the generous king becomes aware of your sin,
confess it, and from his generosity beg his pardon.
Do not deny the sin, for denial is another sin —
indeed, denying the sin is far worse than the sin itself.

اول آن که زنان را چون مردان محل اعتماد نگردان، زیرا که زن اگر چه از قبیله معتمدان آید از آن قبیل نیست که معتمدی را شاید.
عقل زن ناقص است و دینش نیز 
هرگزش کامل اعتقاد مکن
گر بد است از وی اعتبار مگیر 
ور نکو بر وی اعتماد مکن
دویم آن که به مال مغرور مشو اگر چه بسیار بود، زیرا که عاقبت پایمال حوادث روزگار شود. 
مغرور مشو به مال چون بی خبران
زیرا که بود مال چو ابر گذران 
ابر گذران اگر چه گوهر بارد
خاطر ننهد مرد خردمند بر آن 
سیم آن که اسرار نهان داشتنی خود را به هیچ دوست در میان منه، زیراکه بسیار باشد که در دوستی خلل افتد و به دشمنی بدل گردد.
ای پسر سری کش از دشمن نهفتن لازم است 
به که از افشای آن با دوستان کم دم زنی
دیده ام بسیار از سیر سپهر کج نهاد 
دوستان دشمن شوند و دوستیها دشمنی
چهارم آن که جز علمی را فرانگیری که به ترک آن بزهمند میری از فضولی بگریز و آنچه ضروریست در آن آویز. 
علمی که ناگزیر تو باشد بدان گرای
وان را کز آن گزیر بود جستجو مکن 
وان دم که حاصل تو شود علم ناگزیر
غیر از عمل به موجب آن آرزو مکن

One of the sages has said: I wrote forty books on wisdom and gained no benefit from them; I selected forty maxims out of them, and from those too I obtained no profit; then I chose four maxims out of those, and in them I found what I had been seeking:

First, that you should not make women a place of trust as you do men, for a woman, even though she may come from a tribe of the trustworthy, is not of the kind that is fit to be trusted.

A woman's intellect is deficient, and her faith as well;
never place a complete belief in her.
If she is bad, take no regard from her;
and if she is good, place no reliance upon her.

Second, that you should not be deluded by wealth, however abundant it may be, for in the end it is trampled underfoot by the accidents of fortune.

Do not be deluded by wealth like the heedless,
for wealth is like a passing cloud.
A passing cloud, even if it rains down pearls,
the wise man sets not his heart upon it.

Third, that you should not lay before any friend the secrets you are bound to keep hidden, for it often happens that a flaw falls into friendship and it turns into enmity.

O son, a secret that must be kept hidden from the enemy—
better that you speak little of it in disclosing it to friends.
Often have I seen, from the course of the crooked-natured heavens,
friends become enemies and friendships turn to enmity.

Fourth, that you should acquire no knowledge except that whose neglect would make you die in sin; flee from the superfluous and cling to what is necessary.

Incline toward the knowledge that is indispensable to you,
and that from which there is escape, do not seek out.
And when the indispensable knowledge is attained by you,
desire nothing but to act in accordance with it.

مأمون غلامی داشت که ترتیب آب طهارت به عهده وی بود در هر چند روز آفتابه یا سطلی گم می شد یک روز مأمون با وی گفت: کاش آن آفتابه و سطلی که از ما می بری هم به ما فروشی گفت: همچنان کنم. 
این سطل حاضر را بخر! فرمود که به چند می فروشی. گفت: به دو دینار فرمود تا دو دینار به وی دادند پس گفت: این سطل از تو در امان شد؟ گفت: آری!
سیم بر زر خریده تنگ مگیر 
تا بدان نفس او بیارامد
تن به اتلاف مال ازو درده 
تا به اتلاف جان نینجامد

## English translation
Ma'mun had a servant who was in charge of preparing the water for ritual ablution. Every few days a ewer or a pail would go missing. One day Ma'mun said to him: I wish you would also sell to us the ewer and pail that you carry off from us. He said: I will do just that.
Buy this present pail! [Ma'mun] asked, For how much will you sell it? He said: For two dinars. He ordered that two dinars be given to him. Then he asked: Is this pail now safe from you? He said: Yes!
Do not be tight-fisted with silver spent to buy gold,
So that by it his soul may be set at ease.
Give up your body to the loss of wealth,
So that it does not end in the loss of life.
