Section 12 - Abd al-Wasi Jabali

Original content

English translation

Abd al-Wasi Jabali - may God's mercy be upon him. He was a consummate scholar and a skilled poet, who spoke in both languages, Arabic and Persian, and it is agreed that no one has ever managed, as it ought to be done, to compose a fitting response to his famous qasida whose opening is this: Who has a beloved like you—fair, nimble, and heart-ravishing? And in the opening of some of his qasidas he said: In the world there is no idol more heart-illuminating than you; In the city there is no boy more liver-burning than you. Ever since I have gazed upon your dewy tulip [cheek], Ever since I have looked upon your slumber-heavy narcissus [eye], At times, like the tulip, your union makes my face bloom; At times, like the narcissus, your separation makes me hang my head.
