English translation

Amara - may God Almighty have mercy on him, he too is among the early poets and lived in the days of the Samanid state; he had a pleasant nature and charming poetry. Among his sayings are these two couplets:

Though for a while the world was silvery with snow, Emerald came and took the place of the heap of silver.

The picture-gallery of the Kashmiris, at springtime, Surrendered all its own images to the garden.

And this other fragment:

Be not deceived because the world has made you dear; Oh, how many a dear one the world has soon made abject.

This world is a serpent and the world-seeker a snake-charmer; And from the snake-charmer the serpent sometimes brings forth destruction.

And in the spiritual stations (maqamat) of the Sultan of the Path, Sheikh Abu Saeed Abul-Khair (may his secret be sanctified), it is mentioned that one day a singer recited this couplet before him:

I shall hide myself within my own ghazal, So that I may place a kiss upon your lips when you recite it.

The Sheikh was moved to ecstasy and asked: Whose poem is this? They said: It is Amara's. He commanded: Arise, that we may go to visit him; and with all his disciples he went to visit him.
