Section 7 - Farrokhi

Original content

English translation

Farrokhi - may God Almighty have mercy upon him - he too lived in the days of the reign of Yamin al-Dawla, and from the bounties of that ruler's gifts he acquired considerable wealth, and he resolved to journey to see Samarkand. When he drew near that region, highwaymen carried off everything he had. He entered Samarkand but did not reveal himself. He stayed there a few days, spoke this qet'a, and turned back: I saw all the bounty of Samarkand from end to end; I gazed upon garden and meadow, valley and plain. Since my purse and pocket were empty of coin, my heart rolled up the carpet of joy from the courtyard of hope. Many a time, from people of talent in every city, I had heard that Kawthar is one and the paradises are eight. I saw a thousand Kawthars, more than a thousand paradises; but what use, since I shall return with thirsty lips. When the eye beholds bounty yet there is no coin in hand, it is a severed head amid a golden basin.
