English translation

Mohammad Assar Tabrizi - may God the Exalted have mercy on him. He is the author of the book Mehr o Moshtari, and in it there are many subtleties and marvels, and these few verses are from that book, describing the beloved's nose:

Drawn upon the rose and eglantine, rising from the nose, a line in the very essence of grace and delicacy.

The hand of power has set up a silver column, beneath those two amber-scented arches.

Between the trunk and the ruby of that rose-bodied one, a bed sprouting an ingot of raw silver.

A lily flower, yet still unopened, above the jasmine, with the tulip asleep beneath.

And among his sayings is this fragment (qet'a) which he mentioned in the course of that masnavi:

Seek not, Assar, kindness from the nature of people, for a flower never springs up from a salt-marsh.

Faithfulness flees the meaningless outward form of humankind, just as it flees from the mere image of angels.

Through the sieve of the heavens, upon the heads of these, fate sifts down nothing but the dust of treachery.

The one to whom, out of love, you wish ever more good, with malice strives against you worse at every moment.

Like a tear, the one to whom you give a place in your eye, if the chance falls to their hand, will shed your blood.
