Original content

English translation

In the time of Muawiya, Abdullah ibn Jafar was given one thousand dirhams each year from the public treasury (bayt al-mal). When it came to Yazid's turn, he raised it to five thousand dirhams. They reproached him, saying: This is the right of all Muslims; why do you give it to a single person? He replied: I give this to all the needy among the people of Medina, for he withholds nothing from those in need. So, secretly and without his knowledge, they sent someone along with him to Medina, and within a single month he had spent it all, to the point that he became in need of a loan. If the whole world were to fall into a generous man's hand, What is the world? A hundredfold more than the world, and still more. Why should the dervish's heart be wounded by that regret, When the purse of his bounty is the very treasury of the dervish.
