English translation

A sinner was brought before the caliph. The caliph ordered a punishment that he deserved. He said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, retribution for a sin is justice, and to go beyond it is grace; and the rank of the Commander of the Faithful's high resolve is loftier than that he should overstep what is higher and stoop to what is lower.' The caliph was pleased with his words and pardoned his sin.

Pardoning a sin is grace, and retribution is justice; from this one to that one is a distance like from the highest heaven to the earth. When would the wise one, who is aware of the difference between these two, abandon grace and turn his face toward justice?
