Original content

English translation

A certain person recited a couplet to a poet, in which the rhyme of one hemistich used an undotted rā vowelled with damma, and the other a dotted zā vowelled with kasra. The poet said: This rhyme is not correct, because in one place the letter is a rā without a dot, and in the other place the letter is a zā with a dot. That person said: Then do not put a dot on it. The poet said: In one place the rhyme is vowelled with damma and in the other with kasra. He said: Look at this—what an ignorant man he is! I tell him not to put a dot, and he starts adding vowel marks! That base wretch who cannot tell praise from blame, Nor tell fatha from kasra, nor kasra from damma— I marvel at him, that when he boasts of poetry, He cannot tell poetry (shi'r) from barley (sha'ir).
