کودکی از بنی هاشم با یکی از ارباب مکارم بی ادبی کرد، شکایت به عمش بردند، خواست تا وی را ادب کند گفت: ای عم من کردم آنچه کردم و عقل من با من نبود، تو بکن آنچه می کنی و عقل تو با توست.
گر سفیهی به حکم نفس و هوا

نه به وفق خرد کند کاری
بر تو نفس و هوا چو غالب نیست

جز به راه خرد مرو باری

English translation

A child of the Banu Hashim behaved rudely toward one of the noble and generous men. They brought a complaint to his uncle, who wanted to discipline him. The child said: O my uncle, I did what I did and my reason was not with me; you do what you do while your reason is with you.

If a foolish one, by the dictate of the ego and desire, and not in accord with reason, does some deed — Since ego and desire do not dominate you, tread no path but the path of reason.
