A pretender adorned himself in the guise of the Alawis (the descendants of Ali) and rose up to claim that lofty lineage. In his claim no radiance of truthfulness was manifest; And upon his shoulder, from his locks of hair, were the witnesses of falsehood. He came upon a man of spiritual insight (sahib-del); the man sprang up from his seat, sat the pretender at the head of the gathering, and himself sat in the row of shoes (the lowliest place). Whatever the pretender asked for, he gave him even more, and at the time of his departure he performed the courtesy of escorting him. His companions said: We know this person; his lineage is far from this lineage, and his claim in this matter is a lie and a fraud. Neither does his father have a whiff of this house, nor his mother a face in this family. His mother is a town-vagrant and a house-to-house beggar; His father is a pot-mender and a spindle-turner. That one is from the tribe of the base and vile, And this other is from the stable of the rabble. The man of insight said: What we did is not fitting for the truthful ones of this family, but rather it befits the pretenders who have strayed from the path! Whoever has received a portion from the household of prophethood, Venerating him is not the duty of every one bereft of a portion. He is a stranger to the age upon the path of love for him; If you gamble away wealth, property, and rank, that is no strange thing.
