They said to the dog: What is the reason that in every house where you are, no one can walk around it, and on every threshold where you sleep, no one can pass by? It said: I am far from greed and covetousness, and famed for freedom from craving and for contentment; from a whole feast I am content with a morsel of bread, and from a roast I am satisfied with a dry bone. But the beggar is the plaything of greed and covetousness, claiming hunger and denying satiety; his week's bread is in his sack, yet his tongue keeps moving in quest of a single night's bread; his ten days' food is on his back, and the beggar's staff is in his fist. Contentment is far from greed and covetousness, and the content one is averse to the greedy and covetous. In every heart where the honor of contentment set its foot, it bound the hand of greed and covetousness from all things. Wherever contentment displayed its own wares, it shattered the market of greed and the battlefield of avarice.
