Section 36

Original content

English translation

An old man who had spent his youthful pleasure and was left without the vigor of enjoyment bought a beautiful slave girl and at the opportune moment drew her to his side. Though the old man was eager, his member gave him no assistance. He said to the slave girl: Show kindness and open the hand of favor, and with a little rubbing raise this sleeper and rouse this dead one.

Since the thread of my member is very slack, give aid with rubbing, O skillful woman. Unless you rub the end of the thread with your finger, it will not go into the eye of the needle.

However much the slave girl moved her hand, she got nowhere, and however much she rubbed, nothing was accomplished. They heard that she was reciting these verses, though hiding them from the old man:

The old man's member, not reaching its destination, lies asleep like a lean carcass. When you raise it up by force of hand, as soon as you take your hand from it, it stirs no more.
