Section 48

Original content

English translation

A poet went to a physician and said: Something has become knotted in my heart and troubles my temper at times, and from there a numbing coldness reaches all my limbs and the hair on my body stands on end.

The physician was a witty man. He said: Have you recently composed any poem that you have not yet recited to anyone? The poet said: Yes! He said: Recite it! He recited it. Again he said: Recite! He recited. The physician said: Rise up, for you are cured. This was the poem that had knotted in your heart, and its chill was seeping outward; now that you have expelled it from your heart, you have been set free!

What poem is this that, when a wise man asks its name, only nonsense comes to his tongue; and if you recite it over a sick man's draught, the burning fever departs and a shivering fever comes.
