Yazdgerd saw his son Bahram in a place within his harem where it was not fitting for him to be, and commanded him: 'Go out, give the chamberlain thirty lashes, and remove him from the door of the pavilion,' and he named another man to be seated in his place.

Bahram carried out his father's command, but being no more than thirteen years old, he did not understand the reason for his father's anger at the chamberlain. Afterward, one day he came to the door of the pavilion and wished to enter.

The second chamberlain placed his hand upon Bahram's chest and did not let him enter, saying: 'If after this I see you in this place, I will give you thirty lashes for the treachery you committed against the former chamberlain, and thirty more for the treachery you intend to commit against me.' This news reached Yazdgerd.

He summoned the second chamberlain, praised him, showed him favor, and bestowed a robe of honor upon him.

The king must be so well guarded that past his threshold neither in the mind of servant nor of free man can passage be made; Within the sanctuary of the reverence of his glory, which is the veil of the state, no bird can fly and no wind can pass.
