English translation

A poet recited a poem to a learned man. When he brought it to its conclusion, he said: I composed this in the privy (khala, also meaning solitude). The learned man said: By God, you speak truly—for the smell of that place comes forth from it!

Do not call him an eloquent speaker; say rather that his verses, whether they have come from a turbid sea or a clear one— the breeze that has wafted forth strikes the nostril of the person of taste, [revealing] from where it has come.
