Forms of Deception in Research

Deception in psychological research can manifest in various forms, not all of which involve actively misleading participants. While active deception involves explicitly presenting false information, passive deception occurs when researchers simply withhold information about the study's full design or purpose, or when they allow participants to make incorrect assumptions—such as leading them to believe they are taking a standard 'memory test' when the true purpose is different.
