Identifying the pitfalls for social interaction in collaborative learning environments
There has been an increasing demand in computer-supported collaborative learning environments. However, research has shown that asynchronous distributed learning groups (DLGs) utilizing computer-supported collaborative learning environments (CSCL) lack the social interaction that is essential to collaborative learning. This review discusses the two major pitfalls that result from shifting from contiguous learning groups to asynchronous distributed learning groups: (1) taking social interaction for grated and, (2) Restricting social interaction to cognitive processes.
