Negative Sign Placement in Fractions

For any fraction ab\frac{a}{b} with b0b \neq 0, a single negative sign may be written in any one of three equivalent positions — in front of the fraction, in the numerator, or in the denominator — without changing the fraction's value:

ab=ab=ab-\frac{a}{b} = \frac{-a}{b} = \frac{a}{-b}

All three forms represent the same quantity because negating the entire fraction, negating only the numerator, or negating only the denominator each reverses the sign of the quotient in the same way. In practice, the most common convention is to write the negative sign either in front of the fraction bar or in the numerator, rather than in the denominator. This property is especially useful when simplifying results of fraction subtraction, where the computation may produce a negative numerator that can be rewritten more neatly with the sign placed in front.
