Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are two or more fractions that represent the same quantity, even though they use different numerators and denominators. For instance, 12\frac{1}{2}, 24\frac{2}{4}, 36\frac{3}{6}, and 1020\frac{10}{20} are all equivalent because each one names the same portion of a whole. Visually, if equal-sized shapes are divided into different numbers of equal parts and the same total area is shaded, the shaded amounts match—confirming that the fractions are equivalent despite their different appearances.
