Decimal

A decimal is an alternative notation for a fraction whose denominator is a power of ten (such as 1010, 100100, 1,0001{,}000, and so on). Instead of writing the denominator explicitly, the position of each digit after a decimal point indicates which power of ten it represents. For example, 0.7=7100.7 = \frac{7}{10} and 0.25=251000.25 = \frac{25}{100}. This place-value system for parts smaller than one mirrors the way whole numbers use place value for parts larger than one, making decimals a natural extension of the base-ten number system.
