Section 28 - Hasan Dehlavi

Original content

English translation

Hasan Dehlavi — may God have mercy upon him — has a particular manner in the ghazal. He has chosen mostly tight rhymes, strange radifs (refrains), and pleasing meters — which are the very things that are to be considered in poetry, especially in the ghazal. Inevitably, from the combination of these, his poetry took on a special character. Although at first glance it appears easy, it is difficult to compose; for this reason his verses have been called 'sahl-e mumtani'' (easy yet inimitable). He was a contemporary of Khosrow, and they used to keep company with one another and engage in friendly exchanges. As Hasan says: May Khosrow, out of graciousness, accept That which I, the servant Hasan, say. My speech is not like the speech of Khosrow; The speech is only this — that I am the one who says it.
