English translation

Abu Jahl saw Ahmad (Muhammad) and said, "An ugly portrait has blossomed from the Banu Hashim!" Ahmad said to him, "You speak the truth; You spoke the truth, though you are adding to the work." The Truthful One (Abu Bakr) saw him and said, "O Sun! You are neither of the East nor of the West, shine beautifully!" Ahmad said, "You spoke the truth, O dear one; O you who have escaped from the ephemeral world." Those present said, "O foremost of humanity! Why did you call two contradictory speakers truthful?" He said, "I am a mirror polished by the Hand (of God); The Turk and the Hindu see in me what they themselves are." O woman, if you see me as greedy, Rise above this feminine conjecture. It resembles greed but is (in truth) mercy; Where is greed where that bounty exists? Test poverty for a day or two, So that in poverty you may see double the wealth. Be patient with poverty and leave this weariness, For in poverty lies the glory of the Lord of Majesty. Do not sell vinegar, and look at thousands of souls Drowned in an ocean of honey through contentment. Look at hundreds of thousands of souls enduring bitterness, Mixed like rose petals into rose-sugar. Alas, if you only had the capacity, So that the explanation of the heart might become manifest from my soul. These words are milk in the breast of the soul; Without someone drawing it, it does not flow pleasantly. When the listener is thirsty and seeking, Even if the preacher were dead, he would become a speaker. When the listener comes fresh and without weariness, The mute and dumb one finds a hundred tongues to speak. When a stranger enters my door, The people of the harem hide behind the veil. And if a confidant, free from harm, enters, Those veiled ones open the covering of their faces. Whatever they make good, pleasant, and beautiful, They do for the sake of the seeing eye. When would the sound of the harp, treble and bass, Be for the sake of a senseless, deaf ear? God did not make the musk fragrant in vain; He made it for the sense of smell, not for the anosmic. God has constructed the earth and the sky; In between, He has raised much fire and light. This earth is for the earthly beings; The sky is the dwelling of the heavenly beings. The base man is the enemy of the heights; The buyer for every place is manifest. O veiled woman, have you ever risen To adorn yourself for a blind man? If I were to fill the world with hidden pearls, If it is not your provision, what can I do? Speak of abandoning fighting and waylaying, O woman, And if you do not, tell me to leave. What place is there for me in the war of good and evil? For this heart of mine shies away even from peace. If you become silent, (good); and if not, I will do that Which will make me leave my home and family right this moment.
