پادشاهان را چنان عادت بود
این شنیده باشی ار یادت بود

دست چپشان پهلوانان ایستند
زانک دل پهلوی چپ باشد ببند

مشرف و اهل قلم بر دست راست
زانک علم خط و ثبت آن دست راست

صوفیان را پیش رو موضع دهند
کاینهٔ جانند و ز آیینه بهند

سینه صیقلها زده در ذکر و فکر
تا پذیرد آینهٔ دل نقش بکر

هر که او از صلب فطرت خوب زاد
آینه در پیش او باید نهاد

عاشق آیینه باشد روی خوب
صیقل جان آمد و تقوی القلوب

English translation

It was the custom of kings, you may have heard this if you remember: On their left hand stand the champions, because the heart is bound to the left side. The overseers and scribes stand on the right hand, because the science of writing and recording belongs to the right hand. The Sufis are placed directly in front, for they are the mirror of the soul, and better than a mirror. They have polished their breasts in remembrance (zikr) and reflection, so that the mirror of the heart may receive the pristine image. Whoever is born beautiful from the loins of creation, a mirror must be placed before him. A beautiful face is in love with the mirror; it brings polish to the soul and piety to the hearts.
