Book One - Section 89 - The Merchant Relating to the Parrot What He Saw of the Parrots of Hindustan

Original content

English translation

The merchant brought his trading to an end, And returned to his home, his wishes fulfilled. He brought a gift for every slave, And gave a token to every handmaid. The parrot said, 'Where is the gift of your servant? Tell me what you saw and what you said.' He said, 'Nay, I myself repent of that, Gnawing my hand and biting my fingers. Why did I carry a raw message so recklessly, Out of ignorance and foolishness?' It said, 'O master, what is your repentance for? What is it that necessitates this anger and sorrow?' He said, 'I told those complaints of yours To a flock of parrots, your peers. One parrot caught the scent of your pain, Its gall-bladder burst, it trembled and died. I became repentant, saying, "What was this telling?" But since I had spoken, what was the use of regret? A word that suddenly springs from the tongue, Know it to be like an arrow that springs from the bow. That arrow does not turn back from its path, O son; You must dam the torrent at its source. When it passes the source, it takes over a world; If it ruins a world, it is no wonder. An action has effects in the unseen that are bound to be born, And those offspring are not subject to the creature's control. The whole of creation belongs to God without any partner, Even though those offspring are attributed to us. Zayd shot an arrow towards 'Amr; His arrow seized 'Amr like a leopard. For the duration of a year it was begetting pain; God creates pains, not man. If he died from fear at that moment, ascribe it to Zayd; Pains are born there until the appointed time of death. From those offspring of pain, when he dies, Call Zayd the killer because of the primary cause. Attribute those pains to him, Even though all of that is the handiwork of the Creator. Likewise sowing and breathing and snare and copulation, Those offspring are possible for the True One. The saints have power from God; They can bring back the shot arrow from its path. When the doors of offspring are closed due to cause, When the saint repents, by the hand of the Lord, He makes the spoken unspoken by opening the door, So that neither the skewer nor the kebab burns from it. From all the hearts that heard that word, He made that speech erased and vanished. If you need proof and argument, O chief, Recite: "Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten" (Quran 2:106). Recite the verse, "They made you forget My remembrance" (Quran 23:110); Know their power to instill forgetfulness. Since they are capable of reminding and making forget, They are dominant over all the hearts of creatures. When He closes the way of sight with forgetfulness, Work cannot be done, even if there is skill. "You took them in mockery"—O people of the sky, Read from the Prophet to "They made you forget". The master of the village is the king of bodies; The master of the heart is the king of your hearts. Action is without doubt the branch of vision; So man is nothing but the pupil of the eye. I cannot tell the whole of this, because Prevention comes from the masters of the centers. Since the forgetting and remembering of creatures Is with Him, and He comes to their cry for help. A hundred thousand good and bad, that Good One Empties from their hearts every night. By day He fills the hearts with them; He fills those shells with pearls. All those thoughts of the predecessors The souls recognize through guidance. Your trade and culture come to you, So that He opens the door in causes for you. The trade of the goldsmith did not go to the blacksmith; The disposition of this good-natured one did not go to that disagreeable one. Trades and dispositions, like a dowry, Will come towards the adversary on the Day of Resurrection. Trades and dispositions, after sleep, Return swiftly to their own owner. Trades and thoughts at the time of morning Went back to where that beauty and ugliness were. Like messenger pigeons from cities, They bring shares towards their own city.'
