متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

استن حنانه از هجر رسولناله می زد همچو ارباب عقول
The Hannanah pillar, due to separation from the Messenger, was moaning like those possessed of intellect.
گفت پیغامبر چه خواهی ای ستون؟گفت: جانم از فراقت گشت خون؛
The Prophet said, 'What do you desire, O pillar?' It said, 'My soul has turned to blood in separation from you;
مسندت من بودم، از من تاختیبر سر منبر تو مسند ساختی
I was your support, you have departed from me, and you have made a support upon the pulpit.'
گفت: خواهی که ترا نخلی کنند؟شرقی و غربی ز تو میوه چنند
He said, 'Do you wish that they make you a palm tree, so that the people of the East and West may gather fruit from you?
یا در آن عالم، حقت سروی کند؟تا تر و تازه بمانی تا ابد
Or in that other world, God make you a cypress, so that you remain fresh and green forever?'
گفت آن خواهم که دایم شد بقاشبشنو ای غافل! کم از چوبی مباش
It said, 'I want that whose endurance is eternal.' Listen, O heedless one! Be not less than a piece of wood.
آن ستون را دفن کرد اندر زمینتا چو مردم حشر گردد یوم دین
He buried that pillar in the earth, so that it may be resurrected on the Day of Judgment like human beings.
تا بدانی هر که را یزدان بخوانداز همه کار جهان بی کار ماند
So that you may know that whomever God calls, remains free and detached from all the work of the world.
هر که را باشد ز یزدان کار و باریافت بار آنجا و بیرون شد ز کار
Whoever has his business and work with God, found admission there and went out of other business.
آنک او را نبود از اسرار دادکی کند تصدیق او نالهٔ جماد
He who has not been given a share of the divine secrets, how should he believe the moaning of inanimate matter?
گوید آری نه ز دل بهر وفاقتا نگویندش که هست اهل نفاق
He says 'yes' with his tongue, not from his heart, merely for agreement, so that they may not say he is a hypocrite.
گر نیندی واقفان امر کندر جهان رد گشته بودی این سخن
If it were not for those aware of the divine command 'Be!' (Kun), this saying would have been rejected in the world.
صد هزاران ز اهل تقلید و نشانافکندشان نیم وهمی در گمان
Hundreds of thousands of those who follow imitation and outward signs, half a suspicion casts them into doubt;
که به ظن تقلید و استدلالشانقایمست و جمله پر و بالشان
Because their imitation and intellectual arguments are based on opinion, and that is their entire wings and feathers.
شبهه ای انگیزد آن شیطان دوندرفتند این جمله کوران سرنگون
A doubt is raised by that base Satan, and all these blind ones fall headlong.
پای استدلالیان چوبین بودپای چوبین سخت بی تمکین بود
The leg of those who rely on intellectual reasoning is wooden; and a wooden leg is extremely infirm.
غیر آن قطب زمان دیده ورکز ثباتش کوه گردد خیره سر
Except for the spiritual Pole of the age, the possessor of insight, at whose steadfastness the mountain becomes amazed.
پای نابینا عصا باشد عصاتا نیفتد سرنگون او بر حصا
The foot of the blind man is a staff, indeed a staff, so that he may not fall headlong upon the pebbles.
آن سواری کاو سپه را شد ظفراهل دین را کیست سلطان بصر
That rider who became the victory of the army—who is the king of sight for the people of religion?
با عصا کوران اگر ره دیده انددر پناه خلق روشن دیده اند
If the blind have seen the road with a staff, they did so under the protection of clear-sighted people.
گر نه بینایان بدندی و شهانجمله کوران مرده اندی در جهان
If there were no clear-sighted ones and kings, all the blind would have died in the world.
نه ز کوران کشت آید نه درودنه عمارت نه تجارتها و سود
From the blind comes neither sowing nor harvesting, nor construction, nor trade and profit.
گر نکردی رحمت و افضالتاندر شکستی چوب استدلالتان
If His mercy and grace had not protected you, your wooden staff of reasoning would have broken.
این عصا چه بود قیاسات و دلیلآن عصا که دادشان بینا جلیل
What is this staff? Analogical deductions and proofs. That staff which the All-Seeing and Majestic Lord gave them.
چون عصا شد آلت جنگ و نفیرآن عصا را خرد بشکن ای ضریر
Since the staff became an instrument of war and outcry, break that staff to pieces, O blind one!
او عصاتان داد تا پیش آمدیتآن عصا از خشم هم بر وی زدیت
He gave you a staff so that you might come forward, yet in anger you struck Him with that very staff!
حلقهٔ کوران به چه کار اندریددیدبان را در میانه آورید
O circle of the blind! What are you doing? Bring the watchman into your midst.
دامن او گیر کاو دادت عصادر نگر کادم چه ها دید از عصا
Take hold of the robe of Him who gave you the staff; look at what Adam experienced because of the staff.
معجزهٔ موسی و احمد را نگرچون عصا شد مار و استن با خبر
Look at the miracles of Moses and Ahmad (Muhammad); how the staff became a serpent and the pillar became conscious.
از عصا ماری و از استن حنینپنج نوبت می زنند از بهر دین
From the staff came a serpent, and from the pillar a moan; they beat the five-fold drum for the sake of religion.
گرنه نامعقول بودی این مزهکی بدی حاجت به چندین معجزه
If this spiritual delight were not beyond rational comprehension, what need would there be for so many miracles?
هرچه معقولست عقلش می خوردبی بیان معجزه بی جر و مد
Whatever is rational, the intellect consumes it without any explanation of miracles, without any pulling or stretching.
این طریق بکر نامعقول بیندر دل هر مقبلی مقبول بین
Behold this virgin path which is beyond rational comprehension, yet accepted and approved in the heart of every favored soul.
همچنان کز بیم آدم دیو و دددر جزایر در رمیدند از حسد
Just as out of fear of Adam, demons and wild beasts fled to remote islands out of envy;
هم ز بیم معجزات انبیاسر کشیده منکران زیر گیا
Likewise, out of fear of the prophets' miracles, the deniers have pulled their heads under the grass (hidden themselves).
تا به ناموس مسلمانی زینددر تسلس تا ندانی که کیند
So that they may live under the reputation of Islam, in simulation, so that you may not know who they are.
همچو قلابان بر آن نقد تباهنقره می مالند و نام پادشاه
Like counterfeiters, upon that worthless coin they rub silver and stamp the name of the king.
ظاهر الفاظشان توحید و شرعباطن آن همچو در نان تخم صرع
The outward form of their words is Monotheism and religious Law, but the inward is like epilepsy seeds in bread.
فلسفی را زهره نه تا دم زنددم زند دین حقش بر هم زند
The philosopher does not have the courage to breathe a word; if he breathes a word, the true religion will overthrow him.
دست و پای او جماد و جان اوهر چه گوید آن دو در فرمان او
Yet his hands and feet are inanimate, and his soul too; whatever He says, those two are under His command.
با زبانشان گرچه تهمت می نهنددست و پاهاشان گواهی می دهند
Though they lay false accusations with their tongues, their hands and feet bear witness.
