Text and Translation

The father of mankind, who spread the Knowledge of the Names,
has hundreds of thousands of sciences in every vein.
The name of everything, exactly as that thing is,
was yielded to his soul unto the very end.
Whatever title he bestowed was not changed;
the one he called active did not become sluggish.
Whoever is a believer at the first, he saw at the first;
whoever is an infidel at the last became apparent to him.
Hear from the Knower the name of everything;
hear the secret of the mystery of 'the Knowledge of the Names.'
With us, the name of everything is its outward aspect;
with the Creator, the name of everything is its inward secret.
In the sight of Moses, the name of his wood was 'staff';
in the sight of the Creator, its name was 'dragon'.
The name of Umar was 'idol-worshipper' here;
but his name was 'believer' in the Covenant of Alast.
That which is near to us, its name is 'semen';
before God, its form was 'that which is with Me'.
This semen was a form in non-existence;
present before God, neither more nor less.
In conclusion, our true name
before the Divine Presence is that which will be our end.
He bestows a name upon a man based on his end,
not based on what borrows a name temporarily.
Since Adam's eye saw by the pure light,
the soul and secret of the names became apparent to him.
Since the angels saw the lights of Truth shining from him,
they fell in prostration and hastened to serve him.
The praise of this Adam whose name I mention,
I would fall short if I were to count it until Resurrection.
He knew all this, but when the Divine Decree arrived,
his knowledge of a single prohibition became an error for him.
Saying, 'Oh wonder, was the prohibition for the sake of making it unlawful,
or was it subject to interpretation and a warning?'
When interpretation gained preference in his heart,
his nature in bewilderment hastened toward the wheat.
When a thorn pierced the gardener's foot,
the thief found an opportunity and swiftly stole the goods.
When he escaped from his bewilderment and returned to the path,
he saw the thief had taken the goods from the workshop.
He said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves,' and sighed;
meaning, darkness came and the path was lost.
Therefore, the Divine Decree is a cloud covering the sun;
the lion and the dragon become like a mouse because of it.
If I do not see a snare at the time of the Decree,
I am not the only ignorant one in the path of the Decree.
Oh, happy is the one who adopted righteousness,
who let go of force and adopted supplication.
If the Decree covers you in black like the night,
that same Decree will eventually take your hand.
If the Decree makes an attempt on your life a hundred times,
that same Decree will give you life and heal you.
If this Decree strikes you on the road a hundred times,
it will pitch your tent above the sphere of heaven.
Know it is from grace that He frightens you,
so that He may seat you in the kingdom of safety.
This discourse has no end and it has grown late;
listen to the tale of the hare and the lion.
