دفتر اول - بخش ۷۸ - یافتن رسول روم امیرالمؤمنین عمر را رضی‌الله عنه خفته به زیر درخت / Book One - Section 78 - The Roman Envoy Finding the Commander of the Faithful, Umar, May God be Pleased with Him, Asleep Under a Tree

Original content

English translation

He came there and stood at a distance; He saw Umar and fell trembling. An awe from that sleeping man came over the envoy; A sweet state descended upon his soul. Love and awe are opposites of one another; He saw these two opposites joined within his breast. He said to himself: I have seen kings; Before sultans I have been a foremost and chosen man. I had no awe or fear from kings, But the awe of this man has carried away my sense. I have gone into thickets of lion and leopard; My face did not change color because of them. Often I have been in battle ranks and combat, Like a lion when battle is at hand. Many heavy wounds I have received, and many I have dealt; My heart has been stronger than others'. This man, unarmed, asleep on the ground - Why am I trembling in all seven limbs? This is the awe of God, not of created beings; The awe is not of this man who owns a patched cloak. Whoever fears God has chosen piety; Jinn and humans, and whoever sees him, fear him. While in this thought, he clasped his hands in reverence; After an hour Umar sprang up from sleep. He paid homage to Umar and offered greeting; The Prophet said: greeting first, then speech. Then Umar returned the greeting and called him forward; He made him feel safe and seated him before himself. 'Fear not' is the hospitality offered to the fearful; It is fitting and suited to the fearful one. Whoever fears, they make secure; They settle the frightened heart. As for one who has no fear, how can you say, Do not fear? What lesson would you give him? He needs no lesson. He made that heart, gone from its place, joyful; He made his ruined mind prosperous. After that he spoke subtle words to him, And about the pure attributes of God, the excellent companion, And about God's acts of cherishing toward the Abdal, So that he might know the station and the state. The state is like the public display of that beautiful bride, And the station is the private seclusion with the bride. The king and others too may see the display; At the time of seclusion there is none but the dear king. The bride has displayed herself to elite and common alike; The seclusion is between the king and the bride. There are many people of state among the Sufis; Rare are people of station among them. He reminded him of the soul's waystations, And reminded him of the spirit's journeys, And of a time that was empty of time, And of the holy station that possessed majesty, And of an air in which the Simurgh of the spirit Had before this seen flight and openings. Each of its flights was beyond the horizons, And beyond the hope and aspiration of the ardent seeker. When Umar found the stranger-faced man to be a friend, He found his soul to be a seeker of secrets. The shaykh was perfect and the seeker desirous; The man was agile and the mount fit for the court. That guide saw that he had capacity for guidance; He planted pure seed in pure earth.
