آن سبوی آب را در پیش داشت
تخم خدمت رادر آن حضرت بکاشت

گفت این هدیه بدان سلطان برید
سایل شه را ز حاجت وا خرید

آب شیرین و سبوی سبز و نو
ز آب بارانی که جمع آمد بگو

خنده می‌آمد نقیبان را از آن
لیک پذرفتند آن را همچو جان

زانک لطف شاه خوب با خبر
کرده بود اندر همه ارکان اثر

خوی شاهان در رعیت جا کند
چرخ اخضر خاک را خضرا کند

شه چو حوضی دان حشم چون لوله‌ها
آب از لوله روان در گوله‌ها

چونک آب جمله از حوضیست پاک
هر یکی آبی دهد خوش ذوقناک

ور در آن حوض آب شورست و پلید
هر یکی لوله همان آرد پدید

زانک پیوستست هر لوله به حوض
خوض کن در معنی این حرف خوض

لطف شاهنشاه جان بی‌وطن
چون اثر کردست اندر کل تن

لطف عقل خوش‌نهاد خوش‌نسب
چون همه تن را در آرد در ادب

عشق شنگ بی‌قرار بی سکون
چون در آرد کل تن را در جنون

لطف آب بحر کو چون کوثرست
سنگ‌ریزه‌ش جمله در و گوهرست

هر هنر که استا بدان معروف شد
جان شاگردان بدان موصوف شد

پیش استاد اصولی هم اصول
خواند آن شاگرد چست با حصول

پیش استاد فقیه آن فقه‌خوان
فقه خواند نه اصول اندر بیان

پیش استادی که او نحوی بود
جان شاگردش ازو نحوی شود

باز استادی که او محو رهست
جان شاگردش ازو محو شهست

زین همه انواع دانش روز مرگ
دانش فقرست ساز راه و برگ

English translation

That jug of water he held before him; He planted in that Presence the seed of service. He said, “Take this gift to that Sultan; Redeem the king’s beggar from need. It is sweet water in a green, new jug; Say that it is rainwater that has been collected.” The chamberlains felt laughter at this, Yet they accepted it as dearly as life, Because the graciousness of that well-informed, good king Had made its effect in every pillar of the state. The nature of kings settles into the subjects; The green heaven makes the earth green. Regard the king as a pool and the retinue as pipes; Water runs from the pipes into the basins. Since the water of all of them is pure from one pool, Each gives water pleasant to the taste. But if the water in that pool is brackish and foul, Each pipe brings forth that very same thing. For every pipe is joined to the pool; Dive into the meaning of this saying, dive. The grace of the King of kings, the placeless soul: How has it made its effect throughout the whole body? The grace of the well-natured, well-descended intellect: How does it bring the whole body into discipline? Restless, unruly love, without rest or stillness: How does it bring the whole body into madness? The grace of the sea’s water, which is like Kawthar: Its pebbles are all pearls and jewels. Whatever art made a master known, The souls of his pupils became marked by that art. Before a master of legal theory, the quick pupil Studies legal theory with attainment. Before a jurist master, that student of jurisprudence Studies jurisprudence, not legal theory, in discourse. Before a master who is a grammarian, His pupil’s soul becomes grammatical through him. But a master who is effaced on the Path: His pupil’s soul through him is effaced in the King. Of all these kinds of knowledge, on the day of death, The knowledge of poverty is the equipment and provision for the road.
