تا عمر آمد ز قیصر یک رسول
در مدینه از بیابان نغول

گفت کو قصر خلیفه ای حشم
تا من اسپ و رخت را آنجا کشم

قوم گفتندش که او را قصر نیست
مر عمر را قصر، جان روشنیست

گرچه از میری ورا آوازه ایست
همچو درویشان مر او را کازه ایست

ای برادر چون ببینی قصر او
چونک در چشم دلت رسته ست مو

چشم دل از مو و علت پاک آر
وانگه آن دیدار قصرش چشم دار

هر که را هست از هوسها جان پاک
زود بیند حضرت و ایوان پاک

چون محمد پاک شد زین نار و دود
هر کجا رو کرد وجه الله بود

چون رفیقی وسوسهٔ بدخواه را
کی بدانی ثم وجه الله را

هر که را باشد ز سینه فتح باب
بیند او بر چرخ دل صد آفتاب

حق پدیدست از میان دیگران
همچو ماه اندر میان اختران

دو سر انگشت بر دو چشم نه
هیچ بینی از جهان انصاف ده

گر نبینی این جهان معدوم نیست
عیب جز ز انگشت نفس شوم نیست

تو ز چشم انگشت را بردار هین
وانگهانی هرچه می خواهی ببین

نوح را گفتند امت کو ثواب
گفت او زان سوی واستغشوا ثیاب

رو و سر در جامه ها پیچیده اید
لاجرم با دیده و نادیده اید

آدمی دیدست و باقی پوستست
دید آنست آن که دید دوستست

چونک دید دوست نبود کور به
دوست کو باقی نباشد دور به

چون رسول روم این الفاظ تر
در سماع آورد شد مشتاق تر

دیده را بر جستن عمر گماشت
رخت را و اسپ را ضایع گذاشت

هر طرف اندر پی آن مرد کار
می شدی پرسان او دیوانه وار

کین چنین مردی بود اندر جهان
وز جهان مانند جان باشد نهان

جست او را تاش چون بنده بود
لاجرم جوینده یابنده بود

دید اعرابی زنی او را دخیل
گفت عمر نک به زیر آن نخیل

زیر خرمابن ز خلقان او جدا
زیر سایه خفته بین سایهٔ خدا

English translation

To 'Umar there came an envoy from Caesar, entering Medina from the trackless desert. He said, 'Where is the Caliph's palace, attendants, so I may bring my horse and baggage there?' The people told him, 'He has no palace; for 'Umar the palace is a luminous soul. Though he is famed as a ruler, like dervishes he has only a hut. Brother, how will you see his palace when a hair has grown in the eye of your heart? Cleanse the heart's eye of hair and ailment, and then expect the sight of his palace. Whoever has a soul pure of desires quickly sees the Presence and the pure court. When Muhammad was purified of this fire and smoke, wherever he turned, there was the Face of God. When you are companion to the ill-wisher's whisper, how could you know 'there is the Face of God'? Whoever has an opened gate from the breast sees a hundred suns on the heart's sky. The Real is evident among others like the moon among the stars. Put two fingertips on your two eyes; do you see anything of the world? Be fair. If you do not see, this world is not nonexistent; the fault is only the finger of the ill-omened self. Come, lift the finger from your eye, and then see whatever you wish. Noah's people said, 'Where is the reward?' He said, 'It is on the far side of "they wrapped themselves in their garments."' You have wrapped face and head in garments; therefore you have eyes and yet are unseeing. A human being is sight; the rest is skin. Sight is that which sees the Friend. When there is no sight of the Friend, blindness is better; a friend who does not endure is better far away. When the envoy of Rome brought these fresh words into his hearing, he became more eager. He set his eyes to seeking 'Umar and left his baggage and horse neglected. In every direction, pursuing that man of action, he went asking for him like a madman, saying: that such a man should be in the world, yet hidden from the world like the soul. He sought him as though he were a servant; inevitably, the seeker is the finder. A Bedouin woman saw him as a stranger seeking protection and said, 'There is 'Umar, under that palm. Under the date-palm, apart from the people, sleeping in the shade; behold the shadow of God.'
