Book One - Section 71 - The Lion Asking About the Reason for the Hare Drawing Back His Foot

Original content

English translation

The lion said to him: "You, of the causes of illness — Tell this particular cause, for this is my purpose.

He said: "That lion dwells within this well; Within this fortress he is safe from afflictions.

Whoever is wise has chosen the depth of the well, For in solitude lie the heart's purities.

The darkness of the well is better than the darknesses of mankind; He who grasps the feet of people will not keep his head.

He said: "Come forward — my blow has subdued him; Come see how that lion is present in the well."

He said: "I have been burned by that fire; Perhaps you will draw me to your bosom,

So that upon your back, O mine of generosity, I may open my eyes and look down into the well."
