چونک نزد چاه آمد شیر دید
کز ره آن خرگوش ماند و پا کشید

گفت پا واپس کشیدی تو چرا
پای را واپس مکش پیش اندر آ

گفت کو پایم که دست و پای رفت
جان من لرزید و دل از جای رفت

رنگ رویم را نمی‌بینی چو زر
ز اندرون خود می‌دهد رنگم خبر

حق چو سیما را معرف خوانده‌ست
چشم عارف سوی سیما مانده‌ست

رنگ و بو غماز آمد چون جرس
از فرس آگه کند بانگ فرس

بانگ هر چیزی رساند زو خبر
تا بدانی بانگ خر از بانگ در

گفت پیغامبر به تمییز کسان
مرء مخفی لدی طی‌اللسان

رنگ رو از حال دل دارد نشان
رحمتم کن مهر من در دل نشان

رنگ روی سرخ دارد بانگ شکر
بانگ روی زرد دارد صبر و نکر

در من آمد آنک دست و پا برد
رنگ رو و قوت و سیما برد

آنک در هر چه در آید بشکند
هر درخت از بیخ و بن او بر کند

در من آمد آنک از وی گشت مات
آدمی و جانور جامد نبات

این خود اجزا اند کلیات ازو
زرد کرده رنگ و فاسد کرده بو

تا جهان گه صابرست و گه شکور
بوستان گه حله پوشد گاه عور

آفتابی کو بر آید نارگون
ساعتی دیگر شود او سرنگون

اختران تافته بر چار طاق
لحظه لحظه مبتلای احتراق

ماه کو افزود ز اختر در جمال
شد ز رنج دق او همچون خیال

این زمین با سکون با ادب
اندر آرد زلزله‌ش در لرز تب

ای بسا که زین بلای مر دریگ
گشته است اندر جهان او خرد و ریگ

این هوا با روح آمد مقترن
چون قضا آید وبا گشت و عفن

آب خوش کو روح را همشیره شد
در غدیری زرد و تلخ و تیره شد

آتشی کو باد دارد در بروت
هم یکی بادی برو خواند یموت

حال دریا ز اضطراب و جوش او
فهم کن تبدیلهای هوش او

چرخ سرگردان که اندر جست و جوست
حال او چون حال فرزندان اوست

گه حضیض و گه میانه گاه اوج
اندرو از سعد و نحسی فوج فوج

از خود ای جزوی ز کلها مختلط
فهم می‌کن حالت هر منبسط

چونک کلیات را رنجست و درد
جزو ایشان چون نباشد روی‌زرد

خاصه جزوی کو ز اضدادست جمع
ز آب و خاک و آتش و بادست جمع

این عجب نبود که میش از گرگ جست
این عجب کین میش دل در گرگ بست

زندگانی آشتی ضدهاست
مرگ آنک اندر میانش جنگ خاست

لطف حق این شیر را و گور را
الف دادست این دو ضد دور را

چون جهان رنجور و زندانی بود
چه عجب رنجور اگر فانی بود

خواند بر شیر او ازین رو پندها
گفت من پس مانده‌ام زین بندها

English translation

When they came near the well, the lion saw That the hare had fallen behind on the path and drawn back his foot. He said: "Why did you draw back your foot? Do not draw back your foot — come forward." He said: "Where is my foot? — hand and foot are gone; My soul trembled and my heart left its place." "Do you not see my face-color, like gold? My color gives news from within itself." Since God has called the countenance a revealer, The eye of the gnostic ('ārif) remains fixed upon the countenance. Color and scent are informers, like a bell; The neighing of the horse gives news of the horse. The sound of every thing conveys its news, So that you may know the braying of a donkey from the creaking of a door. The Prophet said, for the discernment of persons: "A man is hidden beneath the folding of his tongue." "The color of the face bears sign from the heart's condition; Have mercy on me — plant love for me in your heart." A red face-color sounds the note of gratitude; A yellow face-color sounds the note of patience and denial. Into me has entered that which took away hand and foot, Which took away face-color, strength, and countenance. That which, entering into anything, shatters it; Every tree it uproots from root and base. Into me has entered that before which became stupefied Man, and animal, and mineral, and plant. These are but parts — universals too, by it, Are made yellow in color and corrupted in scent. And so the world is at times patient and at times grateful; The garden sometimes wears a robe, sometimes is bare. A sun that rises fiery-colored In another hour is overturned and fallen. Stars shining across the four vaults of heaven Are, moment by moment, afflicted with burning. The moon that surpassed the stars in beauty Has become, from the anguish of the wasting sickness, like a phantom. This earth, still and courteous — An earthquake brings it into the trembling of fever. How many things — alas! — from this scourge Have been reduced in the world to mere gravel and sand. This air, conjoined with the spirit — When Fate comes, it becomes plague and putrefaction. The sweet water that was like a sister to the spirit In a stagnant pool has become yellow, bitter, and murky. A fire that holds wind under its mustache — A single wind reads over it "it dies" (yamūt). Consider the state of the sea from its agitation and boiling; Understand the transformations of its consciousness. The bewildered celestial sphere that is in constant search — Its state is like the state of its children. At times at the nadir, at times in the middle, at times at the zenith, Within it, troops upon troops of fortune and misfortune. From yourself, O part intermingled with the wholes, Understand the condition of every expansive being. Since the universals have pain and affliction, How should not their parts have a yellow face? Especially a part that is gathered from opposites — Gathered from water and earth and fire and wind. It is no wonder that the sheep fled from the wolf; The wonder is that this sheep set its heart upon the wolf. Life is the reconciliation of opposites; Death is that in whose midst conflict arose. The grace of God has given harmony to the lion and the wild ass, Has given harmony to these two far-removed opposites. Since the world is sick and imprisoned, What wonder if the sick one is perishable? For this reason he recited these counsels to the lion; He said: "I have been held back by these bonds."
