او وزیری داشت گبر و عشوه دهکو بر آب از مکر بر بستی گره
He had a vizier, a Magian and deceiver,
Who, by cunning, would tie knots on water.
گفت: ترسایان پناه جان کننددین خود را از ملک پنهان کنند
He said: The Christians will seek refuge for their lives;
They will hide their religion from the king.
کم کش ایشان را، که کشتن سود نیستدین ندارد بوی، مشک و عود نیست
Slay fewer of them, for killing is no use;
Religion has no scent: it is not musk or aloeswood.
سر پنهانست اندر صد غلافظاهرش با تست و باطن بر خلاف
The secret is hidden within a hundred coverings;
Its outward face is with you, but its inward side is contrary.
شاه گفتش: پس بگو تدبیر چیست؟چارهٔ آن مکر و آن تزویر چیست؟
The king said to him: Then tell me, what is the plan?
What is the remedy for that cunning and that deception,
تا نماند در جهان نصرانیینی هویدا دین و نه پنهانیی
So that no Christian remains in the world,
Neither one with religion openly shown nor one with it hidden?
گفت: ای شه، گوش و دستم را ببربینی ام بشکاف و لب در حکم مر
He said: O king, cut off my ear and hand;
Split my nose, and cut my lip according to the decree.
بعد از آن در زیر دار آور مراتا بخواهد یک شفاعت گر مرا
After that bring me beneath the gallows,
So that some intercessor may plead for me.
بر منادی گاه کن این کار توبر سر راهی که باشد چارسو
Do this deed at the place of proclamation,
At the head of a road that is a crossroads.
آنگهم از خود بران تا شهر دورتا در اندازم دریشان شر و شور
Then drive me away from you, far from the city,
So that I may cast evil and turmoil among them.
