Original content

English translation

Balaam son of Beor: the people of the world were beguiled by him, as though he were the Jesus of his age. They bowed to no one other than him; his incantation was health for the sick. He contended with Moses out of pride and self-perfection, and became as you have heard his story. A hundred thousand Iblises and Balaams in the world have been like this, manifest and hidden. God made these two famous so that they might be witnesses for the rest. He hung these two thieves from a high gallows; otherwise there were many thieves under wrath. He carried these two as a banner toward the city; those slain by wrath cannot be counted. You are precious, but within your own limit; God, God, do not set your foot beyond the limit. If you strike at one more precious than yourself, he will bring you down beneath the seventh depth of the earth. What are the stories of 'Ad and Thamud for? So that you may know that prophets are tenderly precious. These signs of swallowing up, pelting, and thunderbolt became the declaration of the dignity of the speaking soul. Kill all animals for the sake of man; kill all men for the sake of intelligence. What is intelligence? The Universal Intellect, aware; partial intelligence is intelligence, but sickly and dejected. All wild animals, compared with man, are lower than domestic animals. Their blood is permitted to people because they are wild, far from the majestic Intellect. The dignity of the wild one fell low because it became opposed to man. Then what dignity will you have, O rare one, when you have become like startled asses? An ass should not be killed for correction; when it becomes wild, its blood becomes licit. Although the ass has no restraining knowledge, the Loving One does not hold it excused at all. So when a human becomes wild from that breath, how could he be excused, O noble friend? Therefore the blood of unbelievers became licit, like wild beasts before arrows and spears. Their mates and children are all fair game, because they are without intellect, rejected, and abased. Again, an intellect that flees from the Intellect of intellect has transferred from intellect to the level of animals.
