روستایی گاو در آخر ببست
شیر گاوش خورد و بر جایش نشست

روستایی شد در آخر سوی گاو
گاو را می جست شب آن کنج کاو

دست می مالید بر اعضای شیر
پشت و پهلو گاه بالا گاه زیر

گفت شیر ار روشنی افزون شدی
زهره اش بدریدی و دل خون شدی

این چنین گستاخ زان می خاردم
کو درین شب گاو می پنداردم

حق همی گوید که ای مغرور کور
نه ز نامم پاره پاره گشت طور

که لو انزلنا کتابا للجبل
لانصدع ثم انقطع ثم ارتحل

از من ار کوه احد واقف بدی
پاره گشتی و دلش پرخون شدی

از پدر وز مادر این بشنیده ای
لاجرم غافل درین پیچیده ای

گر تو بی تقلید ازین واقف شوی
بی نشان از لطف چون هاتف شوی

بشنو این قصه پی تهدید را
تا بدانی آفت تقلید را

English translation

A villager tied his cow in the stable. A lion ate his cow and sat in its place. The villager went into the stable toward the cow; that inquisitive man was searching for his cow at night. He was rubbing his hand over the lion's limbs, back and flank, now above and now below. The lion said, "If the light had become greater, his gall would have burst and his heart would have filled with blood. He scratches me so boldly because in this night he imagines me to be a cow." The Real says, "O deluded blind one, did not Mount Sinai become torn to pieces by My name? For if We had sent down a book upon the mountain, it would have split apart, then broken, then moved away. If Mount Uhud had become aware of Me, it would have been torn apart and its heart filled with blood. You have heard this from father and mother; therefore you are heedless, entangled in this. If you become aware of this without imitation, you will become traceless through grace, like an unseen voice. Hear this story as a warning, so that you may know the bane of imitation."
