Book Two - Section 114 - The Tale of the Ducklings Raised by a Domestic Hen
Original content
English translation
Though your duck egg was nurtured under the wing of your household hen like a nurse, your mother was a duck of that sea; your nurse was earthly and dry-land-worshipping. The longing for the sea that is in your heart, that nature in your soul, comes from your mother. Your inclination toward dry land comes from this nurse; leave the nurse, for she is of bad counsel. Leave the nurse on the dry land and drive on; enter the sea of meaning like ducks. If your mother frightens you away from the water, do not fear, and hasten toward the sea. You are a duck, alive on dry land and water, not like the household hen, foul with the house. Through “We have honored the children of Adam,” you are a king; you set foot on both land and sea. By soul, press on from “We carried them on the land” to “We carried them on the sea.” The angels have no path toward land, and the animal kind has no knowledge of the sea. You are an animal in body and angelic in soul, so that you may go both on earth and on the sphere. Though outwardly he is a human being, “a mortal like you,” he has the seeing heart of “it is revealed to me.” The clay form lies fallen on the earth; his spirit circles above the highest sphere. We are all waterfowl, my boy; the sea fully knows our language. Thus Solomon is the sea and we are like birds; in Solomon we journey forever. With Solomon set foot in the sea, so that, like David, the water may make a hundred coats of mail. That Solomon is present before everyone, but jealousy is a blindfold and a sorcerer, so that from ignorance, sleepiness, and meddlesome talk, he is before us and we are weary of him. The sound of thunder gives the thirsty person a headache, because he does not know that it draws the blessed cloud. His eye remains on the flowing stream, unaware of the taste of heavenly water. The mount of aspiration drives toward causes; therefore it remains veiled from the Cause-Giver. Whoever sees the Cause-Giver plainly, how would he set his heart on the causes of the world?
