دفتر دوم - بخش ۷ - بسته شدن تقریر معنی حکایت به سبب میل مستمع به استماع ظاهر صورت حکایت / Book Two - Section 7 - The Closing of the Exposition of the Meaning of the Tale due to the Listener's Inclination to Hear the Outward Form of the Tale

Original content

English translation

When will that which is the envy of radiance permit me to say what is necessary and fit to be said? The sea brings foam forward and makes a barrier; it ebbs, and after the ebb makes a flood. Now hear what became the obstacle: perhaps the listener's heart went elsewhere. His thought turned toward the Sufi guest; he sank in that preoccupation up to his neck. It became necessary to go back from this discourse to that tale, in order to describe the state. Dear one, do not suppose the Sufi to be that outward form. Like children, how long with walnuts and raisins? Our body is walnut and raisin, my son; if you are a true man, pass beyond these two things. And if you do not pass beyond, the honor of the Real will carry you beyond the nine spheres. Now listen to the outward form of the tale, but beware: separate the grain from the chaff.
