English translation

Hear the tale of the candle with the moth — listen and choose meaning from the fable. Though speech is absent, the secret of speech is there; beware — fly upward, do not fly low like an owl. One said in chess: "This is the rook's square"; another said: "How did he come to have a house?" "Did he buy the house or inherit it?" Blessed is one who hastens toward meaning. A grammarian said: "Zayd struck ʿAmr"; another said: "How did he punish him without cause?" "What was ʿAmr's crime, that this raw Zayd struck him guiltless, as one strikes a slave?" He said: "This was the vessel of meaning; take a grain of wheat — the vessel is to be discarded." Zayd and ʿAmr exist for the sake of grammatical inflection and form; if that is false, deal yourself with the inflection. He said: "No, I cannot grasp that — how did Zayd strike ʿAmr without guilt or fault?" He said: out of necessity a jest was opened — ʿAmr had stolen one extra wāw. Zayd found out and struck the thief; since he exceeded the limit, the ḥadd-punishment is his due.
