آن خبیث از شیخ می‌لایید ژاژ
کژنگر باشد همیشه عقل کاژ

که منش دیدم میان مجلسی
او ز تقوی عاریست و مفلسی

ورکه باور نیستت خیز امشبان
تا ببینی فسق شیخت را عیان

شب ببردش بر سر یک روزنی
گفت بنگر فسق و عشرت کردنی

بنگر آن سالوس روز و فسق شب
روز همچون مصطفی شب بولهب

روز عبدالله او را گشته نام
شب نعوذ بالله و در دست جام

دید شیشه در کف آن پیر پر
گفت شیخا مر ترا هم هست غر

تو نمی‌گفتی که در جام شراب
دیو می‌میزد شتابان نا شتاب

گفت جامم را چنان پر کرده‌اند
کاندرو اندر نگنجد یک سپند

بنگر اینجا هیچ گنجد ذره‌ای
این سخن را کژ شنیده غره‌ای

جام ظاهر خمر ظاهر نیست این
دور دار این را ز شیخ غیب‌بین

جام می هستی شیخست ای فلیو
کاندرو اندر نگنجد بول دیو

پر و مالامال از نور حقست
جام تن بشکست نور مطلقست

نور خورشید ار بیفتد بر حدث
او همان نورست نپذیرد خبث

شیخ گفت این خود نه جامست و نه می
هین بزیر آ منکرا بنگر بوی

آمد و دید انگبین خاص بود
کور شد آن دشمن کور و کبود

گفت پیر آن دم مرید خویش را
رو برای من بجو می ای کیا

که مرا رنجیست مضطر گشته‌ام
من ز رنج از مخمصه بگذشته‌ام

در ضرورت هست هر مردار پاک
بر سر منکر ز لعنت باد خاک

گرد خمخانه بر آمد آن مرید
بهر شیخ از هر خمی او می‌چشید

در همه خمخانه‌ها او می ندید
گشته بد پر از عسل خم نبید

گفت ای رندان چه حالست این چه کار
هیچ خمی در نمی‌بینم عقار

جمله رندان نزد آن شیخ آمدند
چشم گریان دست بر سر می‌زدند

در خرابات آمدی شیخ اجل
جمله میها از قدومت شد عسل

کرده‌ای مبدل تو می را از حدث
جان ما را هم بدل کن از خبث

گر شود عالم پر از خون مال‌مال
کی خورد بندهٔ خدا الا حلال

English translation

That vile one was babbling rubbish about the Shaykh; a crooked mind always sees crookedly. "I saw him in the midst of a gathering; he is stripped of piety and is bankrupt. If you don't believe it, come tonight, so you may see your Shaykh's debauchery plainly." At night he brought him to the top of a skylight, and said: "Look at the debauchery and pleasure-making. Look at that daytime hypocrite and nighttime libertine, by day like Mustafā, by night like Abū Lahab. By day his name has become 'Abdullah,' by night—God forbid—with a cup in hand." He saw a full bottle in the palm of that elder, and said: "O Shaykh, so you too have a trick. Did you not say that in the cup of wine the devil urinates, hurriedly and leisurely?" He said: "My cup has been filled in such a way that not even one seed of rue fits within it. Look here—can a single atom fit? You have heard this saying crookedly, O deluded one." This is not an outward cup nor outward wine; keep this far from the Shaykh who sees the unseen. The cup of wine is the Shaykh's very being, O wretch, within which the devil's urine cannot fit. It is full and brimming with the light of God; the cup of the body has shattered—he is absolute light. If the light of the sun falls upon impurity, it is still that same light; it does not accept filth. The Shaykh said: "This is indeed neither cup nor wine; come down, O denier—look, smell its scent." He came and saw it was pure honey; that blind enemy was confounded, livid and dark. The elder said at that moment to his disciple: "Go seek wine for me, O noble one, for I have an ailment and am in a state of necessity; I have passed through distress from my pain. In necessity every carrion is clean; upon the head of the denier may the dust of curses fall." That disciple went around the wine-house, tasting from every vat for the Shaykh's sake. In all the wine-houses he found no wine; the vats of fermented drink had become filled with honey. He said: "O rogues, what state is this, what affair? I see not one vat that contains wine." All the rogues came to that Shaykh, weeping, striking their hands upon their heads: "O supreme Shaykh, you have come to the tavern; all the wines have turned to honey by your advent. You have transformed wine from its impurity; transform our souls too from filth. Even if the world were brimming full of blood, when would God's servant eat anything but the lawful?"
