Book Five - Section 15 - Supplication

Text and Translation

O matchless God, bestow Thy bounty! Since Thou hast made our ear a ring (subject) to this discourse,
Take us by the ear and draw us to that assembly where those joyful ones drink of Thy pure wine.
Since Thou hast caused a scent of this to reach us, do not close the mouth of that musk-bag, O Lord of Religion!
From Thee they drink, whether they be male or female; Thou art unstinting in Thy gifts, O Thou whose help is sought!
O Thou by whom prayer is answered before it is spoken, who every moment grantest a hundred openings to the heart,
Thou hast engraved a few letters of the script, and by love of them, stones have become like wax.
The 'Nūn' of the eyebrow, the 'Sād' of the eye, and the 'Jīm' of the ear—Thou hast written them, a temptation to a hundred intellects and understandings.
By reason of those letters of Thine, intellect became a spinner of fine thread; obliterate them, O sweet-writing Calligrapher!
Suitable to every thought bound to non-existence, moment by moment Thou sketchest a beautiful phantom.
Wonderful letters on the tablet of fantasy—Thou hast written eye and cheek, face and beauty-spots.
Let me be drunk with Non-existence, not with that which exists, because the Beloved of Non-existence is more faithful.
He made the intellect a reader of the script of those forms, so that it might derive plans from that scroll.
