دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۱ - در بیان آنک لطف حق را همه کس داند و قهر حق را همه کس داند و همه از قهر حق گریزانند و به لطف حق در آویزان اما حق تعالی قهرها را در لطف پنهان کرد و لطفها را در قهر پنهان کرد نعل بازگونه و تلبیس و مکر الله بود تا اهل تمیز و ینظر به نور الله از حالی‌بینان و ظاهربینان جدا شوند کی لِیَبْلُوَکُمْ أَیُّکُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلاً / Book Five - Section 21 - Explaining that everyone knows the grace of God and everyone knows the wrath of God, and everyone runs away from God's wrath and clings to God's grace, but God Almighty hid wraths inside grace and hid graces inside wrath. This was a reversed horseshoe (deception), a disguise, and the stratagem of God so that those of discernment who see with the light of God may be separated from those who see only the immediate state and the outward appearance, so that 'He may test you as to which of you is best in deed.'

گفت درویشی به درویشی که تو
چون بدیدی حضرت حق را بگو

گفت بی چون دیدم اما بهر قال
بازگویم مختصر آن را مثال

دیدمش سوی چپ او آذری
سوی دست راست جوی کوثری

سوی چپش بس جهان سوز آتشی
سوی دست راستش جوی خوشی

سوی آن آتش گروهی برده دست
بهر آن کوثر گروهی شاد و مست

لیک لعب بازگونه بود سخت
پیش پای هر شقی و نیکبخت

هر که در آتش همی رفت و شرر
از میان آب بر می کرد سر

هر که سوی آب می رفت از میان
او در آتش یافت می شد در زمان

هر که سوی راست شد و آب زلال
سر ز آتش بر زد از سوی شمال

وانک شد سوی شمال آتشین
سر برون می کرد از سوی یمین

کم کسی بر سر این مضمر زدی
لاجرم کم کس در آن آتش شدی

جز کسی که بر سرش اقبال ریخت
کو رها کرد آب و در آتش گریخت

کرده ذوق نقد را معبود خلق
لاجرم زین لعب مغبون بود خلق

جوق جوق و صف صف از حرص و شتاب
محترز ز آتش گریزان سوی آب

لاجرم ز آتش برآوردند سر
اعتبارالاعتبار ای بی خبر

بانگ می زد آتش ای گیجان گول
من نیم آتش منم چشمه قبول

چشم بندی کرده اند ای بی نظر
در من آی و هیچ مگریز از شرر

ای خلیل اینجا شرار و دود نیست
جز که سحر و خدعه نمرود نیست

چون خلیل حق اگر فرزانه ای
آتش آب تست و تو پروانه ای

جان پروانه همی دارد ندا
کای دریغا صد هزارم پر بدی

تا همی سوزید ز آتش بی امان
کوری چشم و دل نامحرمان

بر من آرد رحم جاهل از خری
من برو رحم آرم از بینش وری

خاصه این آتش که جان آبهاست
کار پروانه به عکس کار ماست

او ببیند نور و در ناری رود
دل ببیند نار و در نوری شود

این چنین لعب آمد از رب جلیل
تا ببینی کیست از آل خلیل

آتشی را شکل آبی داده اند
واندر آتش چشمه ای بگشاده اند

ساحری صحن برنجی را به فن
صحن پر کرمی کند در انجمن

خانه را او پر ز کزدمها نمود
از دم سحر و خود آن کزدم نبود

چونک جادو می نماید صد چنین
چون بود دستان جادوآفرین

لاجرم از سحر یزدان قرن قرن
اندر افتادند چون زن زیر پهن

ساحرانشان بنده بودند و غلام
اندر افتادند چون صعوه به دام

هین بخوان قرآن ببین سحر حلال
سرنگونی مکرهای کالجبال

من نیم فرعون کایم سوی نیل
سوی آتش می روم من چون خلیل

نیست آتش هست آن ماء معین
وآن دگر از مکر آب آتشین

پس نکو گفت آن رسول خوش جواز
ذره ای عقلت به از صوم و نماز

زانک عقلت جوهرست این دو عرض
این دو در تکمیل آن شد مفترض

تا جلا باشد مر آن آیینه را
که صفا آید ز طاعت سینه را

لیک گر آیینه از بن فاسدست
صیقل او را دیر باز آرد به دست

وان گزین آیینه که خوش مغرس است
اندکی صیقل گری آن را بس است

English translation

A dervish said to another dervish, 'Tell me, how did you see the Presence of the Truth (God)?' He replied, 'I saw Him without description, but for the sake of speech, I will briefly mention an illustration of it. I saw on His left side a fire, and on His right hand a river of Kauthar (abundance). On His left, a world-consuming fire, and on His right, a stream of pure delight. Toward that fire a group of people had stretched out their hands, and for that Kauthar another group was joyful and intoxicated. Yet, it was a very reversed game, set before the feet of every wretched and fortunate soul. Whoever entered the fire and the sparks would rear his head from the midst of the water. And whoever went toward the water from the midst, he would instantly find himself in the fire. Whoever went toward the right and the clear water, reared his head from the fire on the northern side (the left). And he who went toward the fiery north, emerged from the right side. Few people solved this hidden secret; consequently, few entered that fire, Except the one upon whose head good fortune (divine grace) was poured, who abandoned the water and fled into the fire. People have made immediate pleasure their god; therefore, they are deceived by this game. Group after group and rank after rank, out of greed and haste, cautious of the fire, they fled toward the water. And consequently, they reared their heads from the fire. Take warning, take warning, O heedless one! The fire was shouting: 'O bewildered fools, I am not fire, I am the fountain of acceptance!' They have cast a spell on your eyes, O sightless ones! Enter into me and do not flee at all from the sparks! O Abraham (Khalil), here there is no spark or smoke; it is nothing but the magic and deception of Nimrod! If you are wise like Abraham, the Friend of God, the fire is your water, and you are a moth (ready to burn). The moth's soul keeps calling out: 'Alas, would that I had a hundred thousand wings, So that they might keep burning relentlessly in the fire, to blind the eyes and hearts of strangers (non-initiates).' The ignorant man pities me out of his foolishness, while I pity him out of my clear vision. Especially this fire which is the soul of all waters! The moth's action is the reverse of ours: It sees the light and goes into the fire; the heart sees the fire and enters the light. Such a game has come from the Majestic Lord, so that you may see who belongs to the family of Abraham. They have given a fire the form of water, and within the fire they have opened a spring. A magician, through his art, makes a brass platter appear in the assembly as a platter full of worms. By the breath of his sorcery, he made the house appear full of scorpions, though there were no scorpions there. Since a magician can show a hundred things like this, how must be the deceptions of the Creator of magic? Consequently, generation after generation fell before the sorcery of God like a woman beneath a load. Even those whose servants and slaves were magicians, fell like small birds into the trap. Come, read the Qur'an and see the lawful magic: the overturning of plots that could move mountains! I am not Pharaoh to go toward the Nile; like Abraham, I go toward the fire. It is not fire, it is flowing water; and that other (the water) is, by deception, a fiery water. Therefore, how well said that noble Messenger: 'An atom of your intellect is better than fasting and prayer.' Because your intellect is the substance, and these two are accidents; these two are made obligatory for the completion of that. So that there may be a polish for that mirror, for purity comes to the chest from obedience. However, if the mirror is fundamentally corrupt, its polish will not restore it quickly. But that select mirror which is of a good soil, a little polishing is enough for it.'
