دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۷ - تمثیل روشهای مختلف و همتهای گوناگون به اختلاف تحری متحریان در وقت نماز قبله را در وقت تاریکی و تحری غواصان در قعر بحر / Book Five - Section 17 - Parable of the different methods and various aspirations, compared to the variation in the search for the Qibla by those praying in darkness, and the searching of divers at the bottom of the sea

Text and Translation

Like a people who search [for the Qibla],
spinning in a direction based on their fancy of the Qibla.
When the Kaaba reveals its face in the morning,
it becomes clear who has lost the way.
Or like divers beneath the depth of the water,
each one gathers something in haste.
In the hope of a pearl and a precious gem,
they fill their bags with this and that.
When they emerge from the bottom of the deep sea,
the owner of the magnificent pearl is revealed,
and the other who took small pearls,
and the other who took pebbles and jet.
'Thus He will try them on the Plain of Resurrection,
an overwhelming and exposing trial.'
Similarly, every people, like moths,
fluttering around a candle in the world,
cast themselves upon a fire,
circumambulating around their candle,
in the hope of the fire of Moses' fortune,
from whose flame the tree becomes greener.
Every flock has heard of the virtue of that fire,
and they have all mistaken every spark for that [divine fire].
When the dawn-light of eternity breaks,
it will reveal what kind of candle each one was.
Whoever had their wings burnt by that victorious candle,
that sweet candle will grant them eighty wings.
[But] the flock of moths with eyes sewn shut,
remaining beneath the evil candle, wings burnt,
writhes in regret and burning,
sighing because of the desire that blinded their eyes.
Their candle says: 'Since I myself am consumed,
how can I deliver you from burning and oppression?'
Their candle weeping: 'Since my own head is consumed,
how can I kindle another?'
