دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۴ - در بیان آنک هیچ چشم بدی آدمی را چنان مهلک نیست کی چشم پسند خویشتن مگر کی چشم او مبدل شده باشد به نور حق که بی یسمع و بی یبصر و خویشتن او بی‌خویشتن شده / Book Five - Section 24 - In explanation that no evil eye is so deadly to man as the eye of self-approval, unless his eye has been converted into the light of the Truth, so that through Him he hears and through Him he sees, and his selfhood has become selfless

پر طاوست مبین و پای بین
تا که سؤ العین نگشاید کمین

که بلغزد کوه از چشم بدان
یزلقونک از نبی بر خوان بدان

احمد چون کوه لغزید از نظر
در میان راه بی گل بی مطر

در عجب درماند کین لغزش ز چیست
من نپندارم که این حالت تهیست

تا بیامد آیت و آگاه کرد
کان ز چشم بد رسیدت وز نبرد

گر بدی غیر تو در دم لا شدی
صید چشم و سخره افنا شدی

لیک آمد عصمتی دامن کشان
وین که لغزیدی بد از بهر نشان

عبرتی گیر اندر آن که کن نگاه
برگ خود عرضه مکن ای کم ز کاه

English translation

Do not look at your peacock's feather, look at its foot, Lest the evil eye open an ambush. For a mountain slips from the eye of the evil ones; Read 'and they would make you slip' from the Prophet's story and know it. Ahmad, though like a mountain, slipped from a glance, In the middle of the way, without mud, without rain. He remained in wonder: 'What is this slipping from? I do not deem this state to be empty of meaning.' Until the verse came and informed him That it came to you from the evil eye and hostility. Had it been anyone but you, he would have instantly become naught, Becoming the prey of the eye and the mockery of annihilation. But a trailing protection arrived, And that you slipped was only for a sign. Take a lesson from that and look: Do not display your foliage, O you who are less than straw!
