Book Five - Section 18 - Commentary on 'O the misery of the servants!'

Original content

English translation

He says, 'By your outward forms I was deceived; too late did I see your true state. The candle is dead, the wine is gone, the beloved Sank because of the shame of our crooked vision. The profits turned to loss, a costly debt; To God we complain of our blindness. O how excellent are the souls of trustworthy brothers, Submissive, believing, and devout souls. Everyone has turned their face to some direction, While those beloved ones have turned their face to the directionless. Every pigeon flies within a particular creed, But this pigeon flies toward the side of directionlessness. We are neither birds of the air nor domestic ones; Our seed is the seed of seedlessness. Therefore our daily bread has become so abundant, For tearing has become our robe-tailoring.'
