Book Three - Section 98 - The Congregation Following Behind Daquqi

Original content

English translation

That Daquqi stepped forward in prayer, The congregation came like silk, he like its border. Those kings followed in a row, Behind that renowned imam. When they joined together with the takbirs, They departed from the world like a sacrifice. The meaning of the takbir is this, O imam: 'O God, before You we have become a sacrifice.' At the time of slaughter you say Allahu Akbar, So too in the slaughter of the self, in its killing. The body is like Ishmael, the soul like Abraham; The soul performed the takbir over the noble body. The body was slain of lusts and greed, And became bismillah-slaughtered in prayer. Like the Resurrection, rows drawn up before the Truth, Come to accounting and supplication. Standing before God, shedding tears, Like the standing upright of the Resurrection. God says: 'What have you brought Me In this respite that I gave you? In what have you spent your life? In what have you worn out your strength and food? Where have you worn away the jewel of the eye? In what have you refined the five senses? Eye and mind and ear and the jewels of the Throne— You spent them; what did you buy from the earth?' Hands and feet I gave you like a hoe and mattock; I bestowed them from Myself—when did they become yours? And so, painful messages A hundred thousand such come from the Presence. In the standing, these words come to mind; And from shame he bent double in bowing. The strength to stand was lost from shame; In bowing, from embarrassment he recited a tasbih. Again a command comes: 'Lift your head From bowing, and count the answers to God.' He lifts his head from bowing, ashamed, Then again falls on his face, that raw one. Again the command comes: 'Lift your head From prostration, and give account of your deeds.' He lifts his head again, ashamed, And falls again on his face like a snake. Again it says: 'Lift your head and speak again, For I shall seek from you hair by hair.' He had no strength in his feet to stand, For an awe-inspiring address had struck his soul. So he sits in the final sitting from that heavy burden; The Presence says: 'Speak plainly.' 'I gave you blessings—say, what was your gratitude? I gave you capital; come, show the profit.' He turns his face to the right in the salutation, Toward the souls of the prophets and those noble ones— Meaning: 'O kings, intercede, for this wretch Is deeply stuck in mud, both foot and cloak.'
