دفتر سوم - بخش ۸ - فریفتن روستایی شهری را و به دعوت خواندن، به لابه و الحاح بسیار / Book Three - Section 8 - The Villager Deceiving the Townsman and Inviting Him to the Village, with Much Entreaty and Insistence

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

ای برادر بود اندر ما مضیٰ	شهریی با روستایی آشنا
O brother, in the days of old, there was a townsman acquainted with a villager.
روستایی چون سوی شهر آمدی	خرگه اندر کوی آن شهری زدی
Whenever the villager came to the town, he would pitch his tent in the quarter of that townsman,
دو مه و سه ماه مهمانش بدی	بر دکان او و بر خوانش بدی
And would be his guest for two or three months, staying at his shop and eating at his table.
هر حوایج را که بودش آن زمان	راست کردی مرد شهری رایگان
Every need that he had at that time, the townsman would satisfy for him free of cost.
رو به شهری کرد و گفت ای خواجه تو	هیچ می نایی سوی ده فرجه جو
The villager turned to the townsman and said, 'O master, do you never come to the village to seek recreation?'
الله الله جمله فرزندان بیار	کاین زمان گلشن ست و نوبهار
'For God's sake, bring all your children, for this is the time of the rose-garden and early spring.'
یا به تابستان بیا وقت ثمر	تا ببندم خدمتت را من کمر
'Or come in summer, the season of fruit, so that I may gird my loin to serve you.'
خیل و فرزندان و قومت را بیار	در ده ما باش سه ماه و چهار
'Bring your family, children, and kinsfolk, and stay in our village for three or four months,'
که بهاران خطهٔ ده خوش بود	کشت زار و لالهٔ دلکش بود
'For in spring the country-side is pleasant, and the sown fields and tulips are delightful.'
وعده دادی شهری او را دفع حال	تا بر آمد بعد وعده هشت سال
The townsman gave him promises to put him off, until eight years passed after the promise.
او به هر سالی همی گفتی که کی	عزم خواهی کرد کامد ماه دی
Every year the villager would say, 'When will you resolve to go, for the month of Day (winter) has come?'
او بهانه ساختی کامسال مان	از فلان خطه بیامد میهمان
The townsman would make excuses, saying, 'This year of ours, a guest has come from such-and-such region;'
سال دیگر گر توانم وا رهید	از مهمات ، آن طرف خواهم دوید
'Next year, if I can be free from urgent matters, I will run to that side.'
گفت هستند آن عیالم منتظر	بهر فرزندان تو ای اهل بر
The villager said, 'My family are waiting for your children, O man of piety.'
باز هر سالی چو لک لک آمدی	تا مقیم قبهٔ شهری شدی
Yet every year the villager would come like a stork, till he became a resident under the townsman's dome.
خواجه هر سالی ز زر و مال خویش	خرج او کردی گشادی بال خویش
The master every year, out of his own gold and property, spent on him and spread his wings (generosity) wide.
آخرین کرت سه ماه آن پهلوان	خوان نهادش بامدادان و شبان
The last time, for three months, that champion spread his table for him morning and evening.
از خجالت باز گفت او خواجه را	چند وعده چند بفریبی مرا
In shame, the villager said again to the master, 'How many promises? How long will you deceive me?'
گفت خواجه جسم و جانم وصل جوست	لیک هر تحویل اندر حکم هوست
The master said, 'My body and soul seek connection, but every change is under His decree.'
آدمی چون کشتی است و بادبان	تا کی آرد باد را آن باد ران
'Man is like a ship and its sail: whither will the Ship-driver (God) bring the wind?'
باز سوگندان بدادش کای کریم	گیر فرزندان ، بیا بنگر نعیم
Again he bound him with oaths: 'O generous one, take your children, come and see the bounty!'
دست او بگرفت سه کرت به عهد	کالله الله زو بیا بنمای جهد
He grasped his hand three times in covenant: 'For God's sake, make an effort to come!'
بعد ده سال و به هر سالی چنین	لابه ها و وعده های شکرین
After ten years, and every year like this, with sweet entreaties and sugary promises,
کودکان خواجه گفتند ای پدر	ماه و ابر و سایه هم دارد سفر
The master's children said, 'O father, the moon, the cloud, and the shadow also travel.'
حق ها بر وی تو ثابت کرده ای	رنج ها در کار او بس برده ای
'You have established many rights over him, and you have suffered much pain on his behalf.'
او همی خواهد که بعضی حق آن	وا گزارد چون شوی تو میهمان
'He wishes to repay some of those rights when you become his guest.'
بس وصیت کرد ما را او نهان	که کشیدش سوی ده لابه کنان
'He gave us many secret counsels to drag you to the village with entreaties.'
گفت حق ست این ولی ای سیبویه	اتق من شر من احسنت الیه
He said, 'This is true, but O Sibawayh, "Beware of the evil of him to whom you have done good!"'
دوستی تخم دم آخر بود	ترسم از وحشت که آن فاسد شود
'Friendship is the seed of the final breath; I fear lest it should be corrupted by estrangement.'
صحبتی باشد چو شمشیر قطوع	همچو دی در بوستان و در زروع
'There is companionship like a cutting sword, like December (winter) in the garden and the crops.'
صحبتی باشد چو فصل نوبهار	زو عمارت ها و دخل بی شمار
'There is companionship like the season of early spring, from which come prosperity and countless gains.'
حزم آن باشد که ظن بد بری	تا گریزی و شوی از بد بری
'Prudence is to think ill (of others), so that you may flee and be free from evil.'
حزم سوء الظن گفته ست آن رسول	هر قدم را دام می دان ای فضول
'The Messenger said, "Prudence is to think ill (of others)," consider every step to be a snare, O busybody!'
روی صحرا هست هموار و فراخ	هر قدم دامی ست کم ران اوستاخ
'The surface of the plain is smooth and wide, yet every step is a snare; do not gallop boldly.'
آن بز کوهی دود که «دام کو »	چون بتازد ، دامش افتد در گلو
'That mountain goat runs, crying, "Where is the snare?" As it gallops, the snare falls around its neck.'
آنک می گفتی که کو اینک ببین	دشت می دیدی نمی دیدی کمین
'The one who said "Where is it?" now see! You saw the plain, but you did not see the ambush.'
بی کمین و دام و صیاد ای عیار	دنبه کی باشد میان کشت زار
'Without ambush, snare, and hunter, O knave, how should there be fat tail (bait) in the midst of the sown field?'
آنک گستاخ آمدند اندر زمین	استخوان و کله هاشان را ببین
'Those who came boldly upon the earth, behold their bones and skulls!'
چون به گورستان روی ای مرتضا	استخوانشان را بپرس از ما مضی
'When you go to the graveyard, O chosen one, ask their bones about what has passed,'
تا به ظاهر بینی آن مستان کور	چون فرو رفتند در چاه غرور
'So that you may clearly see those blind drunkards, how they sank into the well of pride (delusion).'
چشم اگر داری تو کورانه میا	ور نداری چشم ، دست آور عصا
If you have eyes, do not walk blindly; and if you do not have eyes, get a staff.
آن عصای حزم و استدلال را	چون نداری دید می کن پیشوا
Make that staff of prudence and logical deduction your leader when you lack vision.
ور عصای حزم و استدلال نیست	بی عصا کش بر سر هر ره مایست
And if there is no staff of prudence and logical deduction, do not stand on any road without a staff-puller.
گام ز ان سان نه که نابینا نهد	تا که پا از چاه و از سگ وا رهد
Take steps such as a blind man takes, so that his foot may escape from the pit and the dog.
لرز لرزان و به ترس و احتیاط	می نهد پا تا نیفتد در خباط
Trembling, and with fear and caution, he places his foot so that he may not fall into confusion (stumble).
ای ز دودی جسته در ناری شده	لقمه جسته لقمهٔ ماری شده
O you who have fled from smoke only to enter the fire, O you who sought a morsel and became a morsel for a snake!
