دفتر سوم - بخش ۱۹ - افتادن شغال در خُم رنگ و رنگین شدن و دعوی طاوسی کردن میان شغالان / Book Three - Section 19 - The Jackal Falling into the Dye-Vat, Becoming Colored, and Claiming to be a Peacock Among the Jackals

Original content

English translation

A jackal went into a dye-vat, In that vat it lingered for an hour. Then it came out, its skin having become colored, [Saying], 'I am a peacock of the highest heavens!' The colored fur had acquired a beautiful luster, The sun was shining upon those colors. It saw itself green and red and brown and yellow, It presented itself to the jackals. They all said, 'O little jackal, what is your state? For you have a perplexing exultation in your head. Out of exultation you have distanced yourself from us, From where have you brought this arrogance?' One jackal went before him [saying], 'O so-and-so, Have you played a trick, or have you become one of the joyful? You played a trick so that you might jump onto the pulpit, So that by boasting you might give sorrow to the people. You strove much but saw no warmth, So from trickery you have brought shamelessness. Warmth belongs to the saints and prophets, While shamelessness is the refuge of every deceiver, So that they may draw the attention of the people to themselves, [Claiming], 'We are happy,' while inwardly they are very unhappy.'
