Overview

This chapter (باب) of Hujwiri's کشف المحجوب gathers his brief biographical notices (ذکر) of the earlier Sufi masters — figures such as ابوعلی فُضَیل بن عیاض (Fudayl ibn Iyad), شقیق بلخی (Shaqiq al-Azdi/Balkhi), معروف کرخی (Ma'ruf al-Karkhi), شاه بن شجاع کرمانی (Shah al-Kirmani), and ابن خفیف (Ibn Khafif). Each notice sketches the master's life, spiritual station (حال/معاملت), and a characteristic saying.

As a group these classical masters form Hujwiri's survey of the imams of the path who preceded his own generation, distinct from the chapter on the recent masters (Qushayri, Abu Sa'id, Khuttali). The container sits between the whole collection and its individual saint-excerpts, giving the numbered sections their proper chapter level rather than letting them hang directly off the whole work.
