خردنامه اسکندری / Kheradname-ye Eskandari (The Book of Alexandrian Wisdom)

خردنامه اسکندری / Kheradname-ye Eskandari (The Book of Alexandrian Wisdom)

The seventh and final masnavi of Jami's Haft Awrang: a didactic, philosophical poem centered on Alexander the Great (Eskandar) as a sage-king. Following the tradition of Nizami's Iskandarnama, Jami frames Alexander's conquests as a frame for ethical and metaphysical instruction, weaving in discourses attributed to Greek philosophers.

Its closing episode is a sequence of laments (ندبه) delivered in turn by the sages at Alexander's deathbed, each meditating on the vanity of worldly power, treasure, and conquest. Section 57 through Section 66 — including Section 62, the Lament of the Sixth Sage — are the individual sections of this sequence, and belong under this work rather than directly under the whole Haft Awrang collection.
